TO FOSTER INTERNATIONAL CULTURAL AWARENESS AND UNDERSTANDING THROUGH THE MEDIUM OF FILM. TO ACT AS A CREATIVE PIPELINE FOR HAWAII AND THE PACIFIC, SHOWCASING NEW AND EMERGING TALENT FROM HAWAII, ASIA, AMERICA, EUROPE, AND THE PACIFIC ISLANDS.
FOUNDED IN 1981 AS A PROGRAM OF THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII AT MANOA, HIFF WAS INDEPENDENTLY INCORPORATED IN 1990 WITH A MISSION OF FOSTERING INTERNATIONAL CULTURAL AWARENESS AND UNDERSTANDING THROUGH FILM. HIFF ADVANCES THIS MISSION THROUGH TWO FILM FESTIVALS, EDUCATION INITIATIVES, AND YEARLY PROGRAMS.
IN 2019, THE HAWAII INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL (HIFF) PRESENTED TWO FILM FESTIVALS, MULTIPLE EDUCATIONAL AND INDUSTRY INITIATIVES, A VIRTUAL REALITY EXHIBIT, AND MONTHLY YEAR-ROUND FILM SCREENINGS. THE HIFF 2019 SPRING SHOWCASE AND FALL FESTIVAL FEATURED A TOTAL OF 258 FILMS FROM 33 COUNTRIES OVER 25 DAYS ON FOUR ISLANDS. IN 2019, HIFF HELD 334 SCREENINGS TO AN AUDIENCE OF 49,994. HIFF ADDITIONALLY HELD 13 FREE COMMUNITY SCREENINGS THROUGHOUT 2019. IN 2019, 228 FILMMAKERS,ACTORS, INTERNATIONAL MEDIA, AND INDUSTRY PROFESSIONALS FROM AROUND THE WORLD ATTENDED AND PARTICIPATED IN THESE FILM EXHIBITION PROGRAMS.
IN 2019, HIFF PRESENTED FIVE EDUCATION PROGRAMS - GUEST FILMMAKER PROGRAM, CULTURAL & VISUAL LITERACY PROGRAM, STUDENT SHOWCASE, FILMMAKER Q&A PROGRAM, AND FREE PUBLIC SEMINARS. WITH ANOTHER YEAR OF EXTREMELY POSITIVE FEEDBACK, 2019 WAS A SUCCESSFUL YEAR FOR THE FESTIVAL'S EDUCATION PROGRAMS AND SEMINARS. ALL EDUCATIONAL INITIATIVES AND VIRTUAL REALITY PROGRAM WERE PRESENTED FOR FREE TO AUDIENCES STATEWIDE. HIFF'S 2019 EDUCATION PROGRAMS SERVED 9,065 PARTICIPANTS DURING THE FALL FESTIVAL IN THE FOLLOWING PROGRAMS: THE GUEST FILMMAKER PROGRAM (GFP) (607 PARTICIPANTS), CULTURAL & VISUAL LITERACY PROGRAM (CVLP) (753 PARTICIPANTS), STUDENT SHOWCASE (145 PARTICIPANTS), FILMMAKER Q&A PROGRAM (6,152 PARTICIPANTS), AND OUR FREE PUBLIC SEMINARS (1,243 PARTICIPANTS). THESE PROGRAMS INVOLVED AN ESTIMATED 228 FILMMAKING PROFESSIONALS AND 214 FILMS, 25 OF THEM SHORTS BY STUDENT FILMMAKERS IN THE EDUCATION PROGRAM, THAT WERE AVAILABLE TO HIFF FROM NOVEMBER 7TH - 17TH, 2019. THEIR PARTICIPATION HELPED TO EXPAND PARTICIPANTS' KNOWLEDGE ABOUT FILMMAKING AND THE MEDIA INDUSTRY, INCREASE APPRECIATION FOR FILM AS AN ART FORM, INSPIRE STUDENTS IN THEIR MEDIA-RELATED CLASS WORK, AND HEIGHTEN CROSS-CULTURAL AWARENESS AND UNDERSTANDING. ALTOGETHER, 17 PRIMARY/SECONDARY CLASSES ON O'AHU AND KAUA'I, 1,680 STUDENTS, 54 TEACHERS, AND 7,395 MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL PUBLIC BENEFITED FROM HIFF'S EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH EFFORTS. ADDITIONALLY, HIFF'S FREE VIRTUAL REALITY PROGRAM REACHED OVER 900 AUDIENCE MEMBERS IN 2019. SPANNED ACROSS 5 DAYS AND IN TWO SEPARATE LOCATIONS, 13 VR PROJECTS WERE PRESENTED FROM ACROSS THE WORLD. HIFF ALSO PRESENTED MULTIPLE STUDENT FILM PROGRAMS AS PART OF THE 39TH FESTIVAL INCLUDING A FUTURE FILMMAKERS PROGRAM (STUDENT FILMS FROM 6-12 GRADES), THE HAWAII STUDENT FILM SHOWCASE FEATURING WORK FROM UNIVERSITY STUDENTS ACROSS THE STATE, AND AGAIN SUPPORTED STUDENTS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII'S ACADEMY FOR CREATIVE MEDIA SMART EXCHANGE PROGRAM WITH SHANGHAI UNIVERSITY AND THE SHANGHAI INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL. HIFF ALSO HOSTED FIVE STUDENT INTERNS THAT RECEIVED SCHOOL CREDIT FOR THEIR PARTICIPATION AT HIFF.
