Organizations Filed Purposes: FOUNDED ON A LEGACY OF PACIFIC OCEAN EXPLORATION, THE POLYNESIAN VOYAGING SOCIETY SEEKS TO PERPETUATE THE ART AND SCIENCE OF TRADITIONAL POLYNESIAN VOYAGING AND THE SPIRIT OF EXPLORATION THROUGH EXPERIENTIAL EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS THAT INSPIRE STUDENTS AND THEIR COMMUNITIES TO RESPECT AND CARE FOR THEMSELVES, EACH OTHER, AND THEIR NATURAL AND CULTURAL ENVIRONMENTS.

THE POLYNESIAN VOYAGING SOCIETY HAS LAUNCHED (THROUGH THE RENOVATION OF OUR VOYAGING CANOE, HOKULE'A) SAIL PLANS FOR HAWAI'I-WIDE EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS/VOYAGES AND A SAIL PLAN FOR A WORLDWIDE VOYAGE. THE PURPOSE OF THE WORLDWIDE VOYAGE IS TO BECOME A CATALYST FOR POSITIVE CHANGE IN HAWAI'I BY CONSTANTLY LEARNING FROM AND NUTURING RELATIONSHIPS WORLDWIDE THAT SHARE THE VALUES AND RESPONSIBILITY OF CARING FOR ISLAND EARTH, HER OCEANS AND CHILDREN, WHILE HONORING OUR HERITAGE AND PERPETUATING OUR CULTURE.

IN 2019, PVS CONTINUED TO MALAMA (CARE FOR) OUR RESPONSIBILITY AND RELATIONSHIP TO THE CANOES AND OUR COMMUNITY THROUGH DRY DOCK, NAVIGATOR AND CREW TRAINING, AND OUTREACH ACTIVITIES.WITH THE INTENTION FOR HIKIANALIA TO TRULY BECOME HOKULE'A'S PRIMARY ESCORT VESSEL DURING THE LONG DISTANCE VOYAGES, SAFETY AT SEA IS PARAMOUNT. AS SUCH, AFTER MUCH DISCUSSION, EVALUATION, AND ANALYSIS OF OPTIONS TO MODIFY HIKIANALIA'S POWER SOURCE, THE DECISION WAS MADE BY PVS PRESIDENT AND PWO NAVIGATOR, NAINOA THOMPSON, TO INSTALL DIESEL ENGINES IN HIKIANALIA. WITH THE NEW ENGINES, HIKIANALIA WILL BE ABLE TO PERFORM THE JOB OF ESCORT AND AS THE SAFETY AND EDUCATION PLATFORM MORE EFFECTIVELY.DURING AUGUST AND OCTOBER 2019, HIKIANALIA COMPLETED TWO (2) DRY DOCKS. THE AUGUST DRY DOCK WAS A NECESSARY COMPONENT TO ENSURE THE SAFETY AND LONGEVITY OF HIKIANALIA, ENSURING THAT ALL PARTS ARE PERFORMING EFFICIENTLY AND REMOVING, REPLACING, OR REPAIRING ANY WORN COMPONENTS, INCLUDING THOROUGHLY SANDING THE MAST, BOOM, AND HOE. DURING THE DRY DOCK THAT BEGAN IN OCTOBER, PVS COMPLETED THE HAUL OUT AND FULL MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR OF HIKIANALIA. WORK INCLUDED REMOVING THE BOOMS AND MASTS TO REPAIR AND REFINISH, AS WELL AS UPGRADE AND PREPARE FOR THE NEW ENGINE AND ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT, INCLUDING REPAIRING OR REPLACING GEAR. THE FINAL STAGES INCLUDING LASHING THE CANOE, OVERLAPPED INTO 2020.THE MAHALO HAWAI'I VOYAGE, WHICH BEGAN IN JUNE 2017, ENDED IN 2019. THIS VOYAGE BEGAN UPON THE SUCCESSFUL HOMECOMING RETURN OF HOKULE?A AND HIKIANALIA IN JUNE 2017, AND ALLOWED US TO THANK THE MANY COMMUNITIES THAT SUPPORTED MALAMA HONUA, PARTICULARLY DURING THE 3 YEARS THAT THE CANOES WERE BEYOND HAWAIIAN WATERS.
