Organizations Filed Purposes:
To share the Aloha spirit with visitors affected by adversity on Hawaii Island
Visitor crisis assistance - in 2019, we served 916 visitors. The top three adversities experienced were Medical Emergencies (33%), Theft (18%), Other Non-Crime (17%). Expenses and Revenue include in-kind donations.
Crime Prevention and Ocean Safety - This year our public service announcement aired 56 times per week all year round. We continue to distribute our brochures that include information on identity theft, safety tips, and water and ocean safety. We are currently in the process of updating our brochures and developing a mobile app in cooperation with a new ocean safety non-profit that we will include on the new brochures. We are also campaigning to get local rental car agencies to utilize VASH keychains that will include safety tips for theft as well as the mobile app information on them. The HTA safety tips link is published in our quarterly newsletter, provided on our website and included in our PowerPoint presentations. We are posting weather alerts on our Facebook page to inform visitors to extreme wave and weather conditions, as well as safety advice.
Community Involvement and Outreach - During 2019, VASH Hawaii Island maintained and strengthened our community partnerships with Kona Crime Prevention Committee, Hawaii Island Safety and Security Professionals, and Chamber of Commerce, as well as giving regular presentations to community groups such as, Rotary Club, Hawaii County Prosecuting Attorney's Office and police academy recruits. We also met monthly with the police departments at shift briefings and maintain close relationships with community hospitals and hospice. In 2019, increase our visibility in the community. VASH Hawaii Island organized and/or participated in several community events and fundraisers, including our annual cabaret event, Visitor Industry Charity Walk, beer garden at Lanihau shopping center, and our annual bowling fundraiser.
