A continuation of 2017 program which recorded and assessed the fish population and fishing activities along the section of the Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail in the area of Makalawena, North Kona. The grant was through the collaboration of the nature Conservancy and Kamehameha Schools, the owner of the property. The program was concluded in 2018 and was very successful. All deliverables were achieved.

Supplies and equipment to teach and guide volunteers on trial maintenance. This program is essential in keeping the trail in accessible condition. Much of the trail is in passive preservation with very little maintenance. The volunteers help to clean the invasive shrubs and trees from the trail corridor and as a benefit, learn about the trail through stories from people who have long ancestral ties to that portion of the trail.

The Partnership for the National Trails Systems, PNTS, awarded ATA with a grant to help bring awareness to the natioanl trail through community informational meetings and hikes. The program conducted 6 community meetings at different locations along the 177 mile trail. The information incorporated through these meetings helped to bring community in the areas to a better understanding of the trail and how community can support efforts to help maintain, clear and protect this invaluable resource.
