CARE AND CONSERVATION OF THREATENED NATIVE WILDLIFE
Provided care and professional rehabilitation to sick and injured native birds and bats throughout the State of Hawaii. Provided treatment for a variety of injuries, illness, malnutrition, emaciation, and more. To date the wildlife hospital has seen nearly 1000 cases. To make a statewide program possible, HWC also managed a statewide transportation network of volunteer pilots and drivers as well as coordinated volunteers to work in wildlife hospital and public areas. Also provided support for seabird fallout season and wildlife first responder training on Oahu which rescued over 200 birds in a four-week timeframe.
Provided both on-site and off-site education programs about wildlife rehabilitation and conservation to student and community groups. On-site programs utilized the Hoopulama Science and Discovery Center, an interactive spaces that teaches about native wildlife rehabilitation, conservation, biology and wildlife medicine. 2019 participants in on-site education programs grew to 450, up from 327 in 2018. Off-site events included outreach programs on Hawaii Island and Oahu, reaching over 12,000 participants combined.
Managed the annual Hawaii Island Festival of Birds. The 2019 Festival was a smaller-scale event that offered select tours highlighting Hawaiis bird species. HIFB provides a platform for learning about Hawaiis birds and their conservation challenges, as well as highlights authentic Hawaiian landscapes and culture through the festivals speaker lineup, vendors and trips.
