Organizations Filed Purposes:
THE EUELL A. WILSON CENTER IS A CHRISTIAN ORGANIZATION DESIGNED TO ENRICH THE HEARTS AND LIVES OF CHILDREN AND STRENGTHEN THE FAMILY THROUGH THE LOVE OF CHRIST. WE WILL DO THIS THROUGH EDUCATIONAL, SOCIAL, PERFORMING ARTS, AND SPIRITUAL DEVELOPMENT TO EMPOWER YOUTH AND THEIR FAMILIES FOR SUCCESS.
AT THE EUELL A. WILSON CENTER, WE ENRICH THE HEARTS AND LIVES OF DISADVANTAGED YOUTH LIVING IN SOUTHEAST FORT WAYNE BY OFFERING TRANSFORMATIVE AFTER-SCHOOL AND SUMMER PROGRAMMING FOR THE NOMINAL RATE OF JUST 1 PER WEEK. IN 2019, WE SERVED 371 YOUTH LOW-INCOME KINDERGARTEN THROUGH HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS. WE SUPPORTED THESE YOUNG PEOPLE IN NUMEROUS WAYS: 1. WE ENSURED THEIR SAFETY AND GAVE WORKING PARENTS PEACE OF MIND. PARTICIPANTS WERE GIVEN NUTRITIOUS MEALS (IN 2019, WE SERVED 15,503 MEALS), AND THOSE WHO CAME FROM FOOD-INSECURE HOMES WERE ALSO GIVEN BACKPACKS OF FOOD TO SUSTAIN THEM THROUGH THE WEEKENDS. 2. WE PROVIDED YOUNG PEOPLE WITH A SENSE OF BELONGING. MANY CAME FROM UNSTABLE FAMILIES, SO THE IMPACT OF CARING ADULT MENTORS WAS TREMENDOUS. PARTICIPANTS ALSO FORGED DEEP FRIENDSHIPS WITH SUPPORTIVE, LIKE-MINDED POSITIVE PEERS. 3. WE ENSURED THAT YOUTH ACHIEVED ACADEMIC SUCCESS. EACH DAY, STUDENTS READ AND/OR RECEIVED HOMEWORK ASSISTANCE. FOR STRUGGLING STUDENTS, WE ALSO OFFERED ONE-ON-ONE TUTORING AS WELL AS AN ENGAGING COMPUTER PROGRAM THAT PROVIDED INDIVIDUALIZED LESSONS. 4. WE WORKED WITH OUTSIDE CONTRACTORS AND VOLUNTEERS TO OFFER A WIDE VARIETY OF ENRICHMENT OPPORTUNITIES INCLUDING DRUM AND KEYBOARD LESSONS AS WELL AS ACTIVITIES INVOLVING S.T.E.M., POETRY, DANCE, ETC. WE ALSO OFFERED FIELD TRIPS TO DESTINATIONS SUCH AS LOCAL MUSEUMS, THE LIBRARY, AND THE THEATER. 5. TO SET PARTICIPANTS ON THE PATH FOR FUTURE SUCCESS, WE OFFERED CURRICULA AND ACTIVITIES FOCUSED ON CAREER AWARENESS, POSTSECONDARY PREPARATION, AND FINANCIAL LITERACY. WE ALSO FACILITATED GUEST SPEAKERS, JOB SHADOWS, AND COLLEGE TOURS. 6. WE GAVE PARTICIPANTS NUMEROUS OPPORTUNITIES TO BE PHYSICALLY ACTIVE THROUGH ORGANIZED SPORTS AND STRUCTURED RECREATION. WE ALSO OFFERED A VARIETY OF PROGRAMS THAT ENCOURAGED HEALTHY EATING AND OVERALL WELLNESS. 7. THROUGH PARTICIPATION IN COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES, OUR YOUTH ENGAGEMENT LEADERSHIP LEARNING CURRICULUM, A COURSE ON VOTING, AND OPTIONAL YOUTH MINISTRY ACTIVITIES, STUDENTS WERE INSPIRED TO BE THEIR BEST AND MAKE MEANINGFUL CONTRIBUTIONS TO SOCIETY. 8. IN AN EFFORT TO STRENGTHEN THE FAMILIES OF THE YOUNG PEOPLE WE SERVED, WE ALSO OFFERED PARENT EMPOWERMENT CLASSES AND FAMILY NIGHTS TO SUPPORT AND ASSIST EACH INDIVIDUAL WITH MEETING PERSONAL GROWTH OBJECTIVES. TO DETERMINE IF PARTICIPANTS GAINED THE SKILLS AND ATTITUDES THAT PROMOTE POSITIVE EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT, WE ADMINISTERED A SURVEY BASED ON THE 40 DEVELOPMENTAL ASSETS. (THESE ARE THE STRENGTHS AND POSITIVE SUPPORTS THAT SEARCH INSTITUTE HAS DETERMINED YOUNG PEOPLE NEED TO SUCCEED.) OUR SURVEY RESULTS SHOWED US THE FOLLOWING: 96% OF YOUTH FELT THAT THE ADULTS AT EAWC CARE ABOUT THEM; 95% AGREED THAT THAT EAWC TAUGHT CLEAR RULES; 98% AGREED EAWC INSPIRED THEM TO TRY HARDER; 92% AGREED THAT EAWC HELPED THEM TO STRENGTHEN THEIR RELATIONSHIPS WITH THEIR PARENTS/GUARDIANS; AND 94% AGREED EAWC HELPED THEM TO OVERCOME PEER PRESSURE.
