THE AUTISM SOCIETY OF INDIANA (ASI) IS THE STATE LEADER IN THE PROMOTION OF AWARENESS AND KNOWLEDGE OF AUTISM THROUGH EDUCATION, ADVOCACY, INFORMATION, AND SERVICE REFERRALS.
INDIANA ALLIES PROGRAMTHE INDIANA ALLIES PROGRAM CONSISTS OF TWELVE PEOPLE AROUND INDIANA WHO ARE ALL EITHER PARENTS OF INDIVIDUALS WITH AUTISM, OR ARE ON THE AUTISM SPECTRUM THEMSELVES. THIS FIRST-HAND KNOWLEDGE PROVIDES A CONNECTION TO FAMILIES THAT CANNOT BE LEARNED FROM JUST READING. THE ALLIES ARE THE FIRST POINT OF CONTACT FOR FAMILIES NAVIGATING THE AUTISM MAZE. FROM ASSESSMENT AND DIAGNOSIS TO SCHOOL RELATED ISSUES TO EMPLOYMENT AND TRANSITION TO ADULTHOOD, THE ALLIES HAVE THE ABILITY TO WORK WITH THE FAMILY OR INDIVIDUAL WHEREVER THEY ARE: EMOTIONALLY, FINANCIALLY, AND GEOGRAPHICALLY, AT ABSOLUTELY NO COST TO THE FAMILY.FAMILIES REPORT THAT BY SPEAKING WITH THE ALLY IN THEIR LOCAL AREA, THEY ARE MUCH BETTER EQUIPPED TO ADVOCATE FOR THEMSELVES AND THEIR LOVED ONES. THIS IS A PRICELESS SERVICE FOR FAMILIES IN NEED.
CAREER AND WORK READINESS THE FACE OF AUTISM IS CHANGING, AS THE GENERATION OF CHILDREN ENTERING ADULTHOOD OVER THEN NEXT FIVE TO TEN YEARS INCREASES. AS A SOCIETY, WE ARE PARTICULARLY ILL-PREPARED TO DEAL WITH THE PROBABLE EXPLOSION IN DEMANDS FOR HOUSING, EMPLOYMENT, AND OTHER CRITICAL SERVICES THAT ARE NEEDED BY YOUNG ADULTS, ADULTS, AND THEIR FAMILIES WHO ARE AFFECTED BY AUTISM AND OTHER DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIESACCORDING TO A SURVEY DONE BY EASTER SEALS IN 2010, 34% OF PARENTS OF CHILDREN WITH A DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITY BELIEVE THAT THEIR CHILD IS UNDER EMPLOYED AND CAPABLE OF MORE. CURRENTLY, ONLY 11% OF ADULTS WITH DISABILITIES ARE EMPLOYED FULL-TIME AND 19% ARE EMPLOYED FULL TIME. 16% ARE NOT UNEMPLOYED AND LOOKING FOR WORK.LOOKING AT THE AUTISM SPECTRUM, BOTH A NEGATIVE AND POSITIVE BENEFIT OF THE DISORDER IS THAT THESE INDIVIDUALS FIXATE (PERSEVERATE) ON TOPICS. THESE FIXATIONS CAN BE USED TO HELP IDENTIFY SPECIFIC JOB OPPORTUNITIES OR LOCATIONS. THE INDIVIDUAL FEATURES OF AUTISM ARE NOT MORE OR LESS SIGNIFICANT THAN THOSE OF MANY OTHER DISABILITIES. HOWEVER, THE RANGE OF POTENTIAL FEATURES AMONG THIS POPULATION IS REMARKABLE. FOR EXAMPLE, ONE PERSON ON THE AUTISM SPECTRUM MIGHT HAVE SENSORY ISSUES THAT KEEP HIM FROM BEING ABLE TO BE IN A BRIGHT OFFICE SPACE OR FROM WEARING A CERTAIN UNIFORM. A DIFFERENT PERSON ON THE SPECTRUM, MIGHT NOT HAVE ANY SENSORY ISSUES, BUT MIGHT NOT BE ABLE TO VERBALLY COMMUNICATE WITH OTHERS. YET ANOTHER EXAMPLE IS SOMEONE WHO PERSEVERATES (OBSESSES) ABOUT ONE OBJECT, A WAY OF DOING SOMETHING, SCHEDULES, ETCETERA. EACH OF THESE POTENTIAL EMPLOYEES HAS BARRIERS TO EMPLOYMENT, EACH OF WHICH CAN BE OVERCOME WITH THE PROPER SUPPORTS.ASI IS A VOCATIONAL REHABILITATION PROVIDER. OUR GOAL IS TO WORK WITH INDIVIDUALS AND BUSINESSES TO FIND THE CHARACTERISTICS OF A PERSON AND MATCH THEM WITH THE BUSINESS LOOKING FOR THAT TYPE OF EMPLOYEE.
DIRECT CAREASI IS A PROVIDER OF DIRECT CARE SERVICES THROUGH THE MEDICAID WAIVER AND THROUGH THE CAREGIVER SUPPORT SERVICES PROGRAM. WAIVER SERVICES INCLUDE RESPITE CARE AND PARTICIPANT ASSISTANCE AND CARE (PAC). CAREGIVER SUPPORT SERVICES ARE RESPITE. WE PROVIDE THESE SERVICES THROUGH A NETWORK OF QUALIFIED AND DEDICATED INDIVIDUALS WHO HAVE RECEIVED TRAINING IN AUTISM AND RELATED BEHAVIORS.RESPITE CARE IS ESSENTIAL TO THE WELL-BEING OF MANY FAMILIES LIVING WITH AUTISM. THIS TIME GIVES THE PARENT TIME TO CONNECT WITH ANOTHER ADULT, ANOTHER CHILD, OR JUST PLAIN RELAX! RESPITE CARE IS NOT TO BE USED AS CHILD CARE FOR THE PURPOSES OF EMPLOYMENT.PARTICIPANT ASSISTANCE AND CARE (PAC) INVOLVES SOMEONE 1:1 WORKING WITH AN INDIVIDUAL ON THE SPECTRUM SO THAT PERSON ACQUIRES A SKILL. IT IS GOAL-DRIVEN. PAC CAN BE IN THE HOME OR IN THE COMMUNITY.
