EXHIBITIONSA SENSE OF BEAUTY: SHOWCASING THE POWER AND BEAUTY IN NATIVE ART (MARCH-AUGUST) THE EXHIBIT INCLUDED CUSTOMARY AND CONTEMPORARY NATIVE AMERICAN POTTERY, BLANKETS, TEXTILES, JEWELRY, GLASS OBJECTS AND CONTEMPORARY ARTWORK AND POETRY WERE DISPLAYED IMAGINATIVELY: A RIVER OF POTTERY, A WHIRLWIND OF BLANKETS, MANY FOR THE FIRST TIME.BRINGING FRIENDS TOGETHER: CONTEMPORARY HOPI CARVINGS FROM THE EAGLE, PERELMAN AND RADER COLLECTIONS (MARCH-JULY), THE EXHIBIT INCLUDED KATSINAS RECENTLY DONATED TO THE MUSEUM BY MEL PERELMAN, MIKE EAGLE AND TERRY RADER. EITELJORG STAFF CONSULTED WITH THE HOPI TRIBAL HISTORIC PRESERVATION OFFICE, RESULTING IN A MUCH RICHER INTERPRETATIVE TECHNIQUE THAT WAS ALSO SENSITIVE TO HOPI CULTURAL PARAMETERS OF THE KATSINAM. FOR A LOVE OF HIS PEOPLE: THE PHOTOGRAPHY OF HORACE POOLAW (MAY-APRIL) THE EXHIBIT WAS CREATED BY THE SMITHSONIAN'S NATIONAL MUSEUM OF THE AMERICAN INDIAN, FEATURED 75 B&W PHOTOS BY HORACE POOLAW (KIOWA), LOOKING AT A MID-20TH CENTURY NATIVE LIFE. POOLAW (1906-1984), PHOTOGRAPHED FROM THE 1920S-1970S, AN ERA NOT TYPICALLY PHOTO-DOCUMENTED SO IT IS IMPORTANT TO SHARE TO BREAK SEPIA-TONED STEREOTYPES. BLURRING THE LINE, THE 2019 EITELJORG CONTEMPORARY ART FELLOWSHIP (NOV 19-FEB 20), THE EXHIBIT FEATURED THE WORK OF FIVE NATIVE AMERICAN OR FIRST NATION ARTISTS IN THE 10TH ROUND HONORING NATIVE EXPRESSION WITH AN EXHIBITION, CATALOG AND NEWLY LAUNCHED SUB-SITE DEDICATED TO THE FELLOWSHIP. NATIVE AMERICAN ARTISTS HONORED THIS YEAR INCLUDE RITA LETENDRE (ABENAKI), HANNAH CLAUS (BAY OF QUINTE MOHAWK), DYANI WHITE HAWK (SICANGU LAKOTA), DEMIAN DINYAZHI (DIN) AND MATTHEW KIRK (NAVAJO).

PUBLIC PROGRAMSIN 2019, PUBLIC PROGRAMMING CONNECTED THE MUSEUM'S MISSION TO THE COMMUNITY BOTH WITHIN AND OUTSIDE THE MUSEUM'S WALLS. THE ANNUAL LEON JETT MEMORIAL LECTURE SAW SPECIAL GUEST RON CRAIG, RELAYING THE STORY OF YORK ON THE LEWIS AND CLARK EXPEDITION. FAVORITES LIKE THE CURATOR'S CHOICE SERIES AND WESTERN BOOK CLUB EXPOSED VISITORS TO NEW ARTISTS, AUTHORS AND PERSPECTIVES. NATIVE AMERICAN STORYTELLER, DOVIE THOMASON (LAKOTA/KIOWA APACHE) PERFORMED FOR FAMILIES IN PARTNERSHIP WITH STORYTELLING ARTS OF INDIANA. MARCH SAW THE RETURN OF THE POPULAR APPRAISAL DAY WITH COWAN'S AUCTION HOUSE. A COLLABORATION WITH THE INDIANAPOLIS PUBLIC LIBRARY LED TO A HOST OF PROGRAM OFFERINGS RELATED TO THE WESTERN CLASSIC, TRUE GRIT, BY CHARLES PORTIS DURING A THREE-MONTH SPAN. PROGRAMS INCLUDED BOOK DISCUSSIONS, A KEYNOTE SPEAKER, CHUCK WAGON FOOD, HISTORICAL INTERPRETERS, GALLERY TOURS, A REPTILE PROGRAM WITH THE JOSEPH MOORE MUSEUM AND A CHILDREN'S POETRY CLASS WITH BRICK STREET POETRY.

FESTIVALS AND EVENTSTHE EITELJORG MUSEUM CONDUCTS SEVERAL FESTIVALS AND EVENTS.COWPOKES AND COCKTAILS IS THE EITELJORG MUSEUMS ANNUAL PREMIER FUNDRAISING EVENT. IT IS AN EVENING OF WESTERN FUN, MUSIC, FOOD, INCLUDING LIVE AND SILENT AUCTIONS, WHICH BENEFIT THE MUSEUMS EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH PROGRAMS, ANNUALLY SERVING MORE THAN 20,000 STUDENTS. INDIAN MARKET & FESTIVAL IS THE EITELJORG' S LARGEST PUBLIC EVENT AND FEATURES JURIED ART FOR SALE BY 150+ TOP NATIVE AMERICAN ARTISTS FROM ACROSS THE U.S. PERFORMANCES BY NATIVE AMERICAN STORYTELLERS, MUSICIANS, DANCERS AND CULTURE BEARERS EXPAND ITS APPEAL BEYOND COLLECTORS. SPRING MARKET IN MARCH PRESENTS ADDITIONAL OPPORTUNITIES TO MEET ARTISTS FIRST-HAND WHILE SHOPPING AND ENJOYING THE MUSEUM.
