Organizations Filed Purposes:
THE PURPOSE OF THE HORIZON LEAGUE, INC. IS TO PROVIDE MEMBER INSTITUTIONS WITH AN ORGANIZATION TO MAINTAIN INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS IN CONFORMITY WITH THE DIGNITY AND HIGH PURPOSE OF THE MEMBERSHIP. MEMBERS OF THE LEAGUE REGARD COMPETITIVE ATHLETICS AS A VALUABLE EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE.
MARKETING AND PROMOTING OF THE LEAGUE AND MEMBER INSTITUTIONS, MAINTENANCE OF THE LEAGUES WEBSITE, SUPPORTING OUR SCHOOLS ATHLETIC DEPARTMENTS AND HELPING TO ENSURE OUR SCHOOLS ATHLETIC DEPARTMENTS ARE IN COMPLIANCE WITH NCAA REGULATIONS.
THE STUDENT ASSISTANCE FUND (SAF) PROVIDES FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE TO ALL STUDENT ATHLETES IN OUR (10) MEMBER SCHOOLS. SAF IS AN ONGOING PROGRAM, FUNDED THROUGH NCAA GRANTS, WITH THE OBJECTIVE OF ASSISTING STUDENT ATHLETES IN PERSONAL AND ACADEMIC AREAS. TYPES OF ASSISTANCE INCLUDE: TUITION ASSISTANCE (FOR SUMMER SCHOOL AND FIFTH OR SIXTH YEAR); ACADEMIC TUTORING; ASSISTANCE WITH MEDICAL AND DENTAL EXPENSES; CLOTHING ALLOWANCES AND ASSISTANCE WITH TRAVEL FOR FAMILY EMERGENCIES. THE SAF HELPS 2,700 STUDENTS ANNUALLY.
IN 2019-20, THE HORIZON LEAGUE PRODUCED VIDEO STREAMING OF MANY LEAGUE ACTIVITIES. ALL VIDEO PRODUCTIONS ARE PART OF OUR HORIZON LEAGUE NETWORK ON ESPN3 AND ESPN+. THESE LEAGUE PRODUCTIONS ENHANCE THE STUDENT-ATHLETE EXPERIENCE AND PROVIDE INCREASED EXPOSURE FOR OUR MEMBER SCHOOLS. IN THE PAST YEAR THE NUMBER OF EVENTS WAS LOWER DUE TO THE COVID-RELATED CANCELLATION OF SPRING CHAMPIONSHIPS. DESPITE THESE CANCELLATIONS, OVER 440 SPORTING EVENTS WERE SHOWN ON ESPN, ESPN3 AND ESPN+ IN 2019-20, INCLUDING 9 LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIPS AND THE LEAGUE REACHED AN AUDIENCE OF 1,500,000 VIEWERS. THE LEAGUE DISTRIBUTES VIDEO CONTENT TO A NATIONAL AUDIENCE TO PROMOTE THE HORIZON LEAGUE'S COLLEGIATE MODEL WHICH EMBODIES THE LEAGUE'S CORE VALUES.
