Organizations Filed Purposes: To enrich the culture of our city through independent film exhibition, film education and community engagement

Film Exhibition & Education - With the March 13, 2020 shutdown of the Kan-Kan Cinema just ahead of its grand opening, IFPs many first-year plans were cancelled or delayed until the theatre could safely open. In the meantime, IFP pivoted to the virtual realm. In this mission area, we collaborated with local organizations to present virtual film + conversation events, including the Hoosier Environmental Council, Big Car Collaborative and Design Week Indy through the end of June. More events, virtually and outdoors, have been planned in the months ahead. Prior to the shutdown, IFP had planned to serve as a venue for two local film festivals and host a premiere screening of films commissioned by Indiana Humanities.

Future Filmmakers Lab -Unable to present in-person filmmaking courses to teens, IFP pivoted to planning for a virtual Future Filmmakers Workshop scheduled for July 2020. Work in June 2020 included the shooting of three short instructive videos, recruiting mentors and promoting the workshop first to our near-eastside neighborhood and youth-serving groups, then the whole city. This 3-week workshop included weekly Zoom meeting with students and mentors as well as office hours for additional instruction and mentorship with the goal of each participant writing, shooting and editing a short film.

Local Filmmaker Initiative In May, IFP launched its first Filmmaker Town Hall, a virtual gathering of filmmakers to talk about social and cultural issues. Monthly or bi-monthly Town Halls were planned for the duration of the theatres shutdown due to COVID. IFP also highlighted the work of local filmmakers on its website with a dedicated Watch Local page. In June, IFP hosted the virtual premiere of a local filmmakers documentary film following its film festival run, followed by an online Q&A with the filmmaker and subjects of the film. Prior to shutdown, IFP had several premiere screenings of locally-made films scheduled that will be rescheduled when the theatre re-opens.
