PROVIDED SUPPORT TO THE LIBRARY FOR A SERIES OF FREE PROGRAMS AND OUTREACH EFFORTS DESIGNED TO HELP CHILDREN BECOME MORE CAPABLE, ENTHUSIASTIC READERS AND SAVVY, PRODUCTIVE USERS OF TECHNOLOGY. OFFERED AT 24 LOCATIONS THROUGHOUT THE CITY, INCLUDING EIGHT IN CENTER TOWNSHIP WHERE ONE-THIRD OF CHILDREN LIVE IN POVERTY, THESE PROGRAMS ARE HIGHLY ACCESSIBLE AND REACH UNDERSERVED AUDIENCES. EXAMPLES OF MAJOR CHILDREN'S PROGRAMS INCLUDED: SUMMER READING PROGRAM WHICH ENROLLED MORE THAN 45,000 PARTICIPANTS AND REWARDED CHILDREN AND FAMILIES FOR READING OVER THE SUMMER MONTHS. READY TO READ - A MULTI-FACETED INITIATIVE TO HELP CHILDREN UNDER THE AGE OF FIVE DEVELOP EARLY LITERACY AND TECHNOLOGY SKILLS NEEDED FOR A SUCCESSFUL START IN SCHOOL - OFFERED PROGRAMS SUCH AS ON THE ROAD TO READING (SERVING APPROXIMATELY 1,200 CHILDREN EACH MONTH WITH PROGRAMS TO APPROXIMATELY 70 HOME AND FAITH-BASED DAYCARES IN LOW-TO-MODERATE INCOME AREAS CONSISTING OF A STORY PROGRAM AND A DELIVERY OF BUNNY BAGS FILLED WITH PICTURE BOOKS FOR THE CHILDREN TO ENJOY BETWEEN VISITS); REACH OUT AND READ IN (WITH MORE THAN 900 CHILDREN AND ADULTS PARTICIPATING, THE PROGRAMS INTRODUCED HISPANIC FAMILIES TO THE LIBRARY'S SERVICES SUCH AS BILINGUAL STORY TIMES AND GIVEAWAYS OF 500 FREE BOOKS IN SPANISH TO PARENTS AND CHILDREN TO ENCOURAGE READING AT HOME); PRESCHOOL PROGRAMS (HIGH-QUALITY EARLY LEARNING EXPERIENCES ABOUT SCIENCE, MUSIC AND MOVEMENT PROVIDED FREE OPPORTUNITIES FOR MORE THAN 7,000 BABIES, TODDLERS AND PRESCHOOLERS AND THEIR CAREGIVERS); EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATOR CONFERENCE (FREE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS FOR AREA CHILDCARE PROVIDERS, FEATURED NATIONALLY-KNOWN KEYNOTE SPEAKERS AND WERE ATTENDED BY 621 EDUCATORS AND CHILDREN'S LIBRARIANS); 1,000 BOOKS BY KINDERGARTEN (ENCOURAGED FAMILIES TO READ 1,000 BOOKS TO YOUNG CHILDREN BEFORE THEY ENTER KINDERGARTEN THROUGH A SYSTEM OF TRACKING SHEETS AND INCENTIVES WHEN THEY REACH MILESTONES ALONG THEIR READING JOURNEY); AND PROVIDED SUPPORT OF THE LIBRARY'S HERBERT SIMON EARLY LITERACY SPECIALIST WHO OVERSEES AND EVALUATES READY TO READ. ALSO PROVIDED FUNDING OF TEEN PROGRAMS WHICH INCLUDED VISITS BY YOUNG ADULT AUTHORS, THEATRE PROGRAMS AND A BOOK CLUB FOR TEENS PROVIDING OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOUNG ADULTS TO CONNECT WITH BOOKS AND EACH OTHER IN SAFE LOCATIONS.
PROVIDED SUPPORT TO THE LIBRARY TO FUND PUBLIC PROGRAMS HIGHLIGHTING THE CULTURES AND UNIQUE COMMUNITIES IN INDIANAPOLIS. EXAMPLES OF MAJOR PROGRAMS INCLUDED: FALL FEST AND MEET THE ARTISTS, PROGRAMS OF THE LIBRARY'S AFRICAN-AMERICAN HISTORY COMMITTEE, WERE ATTENDED BY MORE THAN 2,000 INDIVIDUALS; ART AND MUSIC WORKSHOPS WERE TIED TO THE LIBRARY'S SUMMER READING PROGRAM AND HELPED MORE THAN 5,000 CHILDREN EXPLORE VARIOUS ART FORMS AND MUSIC GENRES; CLASSICAL MUSIC CONCERTS FEATURED MUSICIANS FROM THE INDIANAPOLIS SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA PERFORMING FREE CONCERTS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR AT CENTRAL LIBRARY AND ADDITIONAL CONCERTS AT OTHER LIBRARY BRANCHES DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON TO EXPOSE PATRONS TO CLASSICAL MUSIC IN A FREE AND OPEN SETTING; CENTER FOR BLACK LITERATURE & CULTURE, WHICH IS A DEDICATED SPACE AT CENTRAL LIBRARY CELEBRATING THE VIBRANT HERITAGE AND TRIUMPHS OF THOSE BORN OF AFRICAN ROOTS AND PROVIDES A PLACE FOR ALL WHO ARE INTERESTED IN EXPLORING THIS RICH CULTURE AND HERITAGE THROUGH COLLECTIONS, RESOURCES AND PROGRAMS; AND BRANCH PROGRAMS THAT WERE SPECIFIC TO THE NEEDS OF THEIR COMMUNITIES SUCH AS ART SQUARED, NEAR WEST COMMUNITY DAY AND MUSIC PROGRAMS.
