The Joseph Maley Foundation was founded in 2008, in honor of the life and spirit of Joseph Maley, a young man with severe disabilities who inspired others and who passed away in August 2008 at age 18 from leukemia. The Foundation's mission is to serve children and young adults of all abilities. The Foundation does this by focusing on and supporting programs to serve children and young adults including disability awareness to schools and organizations, mental, physical and emotional health understanding to children, advocacy to connect familes and educators, sibling workshops, adaptive and inclusive athletic programs, AND acceptance of all through puppets in a relaxed environment.
JOSEPH MALEY FITNESS (ADAPTIVE ATHLETICS) - THIS PROGRAM USES ADAPTED SPORTS AND ACTIVITIES TO NURTURE A STRONG SENSE OF SELF-ESTEEM AND POSITIVE SELF-IMAGE FOR BOTH OUR PARTICIPANTS AND VOLUNTEERS. ATHLETES ARE TEAMED WITH TRAINED VOLUNTEERS AND ENJOY THE PHYSICAL AND EMOTIONAL BENEFITS OF EXERCISE. IN 2019, JMF OFFERED THE FOLLOWING ADAPTIVE SPORTS:BASKETBALL, T-BALL, CHEERLEADING, SWIMMING, ROWWING, YOGA, RUNNING, AND SOCCER. 304 ATHLETES PARTICIPATED IN THESE PROGRAMS DURING 2019.
THE JOSEPH MALEY FOUNDATION PROVIDES SUPPORT FOR CONTINUED EDUCATION THROUGH SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES. IN 2019 4 INDIVIDUALS RECEIVED SCHOLARSHIPS FROM THE JOSEPH MALEY FOUNDATION.
THE JMFRIENDS PROGRAM IS A UNIQUE WAY TO TEACH CHILDREN EMPATHY, COMPASSION, UNDERSTANDING, RESPECT, AND ACCEPTANCE OF ALL WITH THE HELP OF CHILD-SIZE PUPPETS AND CAREFULLY CONSIDERED CURRICULUM. IN 2019, JMF'S PUPPET TROUPES PERFORMED FOR 11,827 CHILDREN. AFTER EXTENSIVE TRAINING IN THE EFFECTIVE USE OF THESE PUPPETS, THE TROUPE HOSTS PUPPET SHOWS AND Q&A SESSIONS TO TEACH YOUNGER STUDENTS THE IMPORTANCE OF ACCEPTING OTHERS.
