KEEP INDIANAPOLIS BEAUTIFUL (KIB) WORKS WITH THOUSANDS OF NEIGHBORS AND VOLUNTEERS TO PLANT TREES, CREATE GREENSPACES, PICK UP LITTER, ENGAGE STUDENTS IN NATURE, AND RESTORE HABITAT, CREATING LIFE-SUSTAINING LANDSCAPES THAT BEAUTIFY AND STRENGTHEN COMMUNITIES.

COMMUNITY FORESTRY: IN 2019, KIB PLANTED 3,931 TREES IN STRATEGIC LOCATIONS THROUGHOUT MARION COUNTY, FOR A TOTAL OF ABOUT 58,000 TOTAL TREES PLANTED BY KIB SINCE 2006. KIB'S CUSTOMIZED MAPPING TOOL HELPED STAFF IDENTIFY WHERE TREES MIGHT PROVIDE THE MOST COMMUNITY, HEALTH, AND ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS, HELPING KIB DECIDE WHERE TO DIRECT OUTREACH AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT EFFORTS; MANY OF THESE TREES WILL HELP CAPTURE STORMWATER, PREVENTING SEWAGE FROM OVERFLOWING INTO INDY STREAMS DURING HEAVY RAINS. FOR THE FIRST TIME, 100% OF THE TREES PLANTED BY KIB IN 2019 WERE NATIVE TO INDIANA AND SURROUNDING STATES. ABOUT ONE-THIRD OF ALL THE TREES PLANTED WERE "GIVING TREES," MEANING THEY SUPPORTED A LARGE NUMBER OF POLLINATING INSECTS.

CLEANUPS, BEAUTIFICATION, AND PLACEMAKING: MORE THAN 13,800 VOLUNTEERS JOINED KIB TO SERVE THEIR COMMUNITY IN 2019. KIB COORDINATED 328 NEIGHBORHOOD CLEANUPS TO COMBAT HEAVY LITTER, AND 927 NEIGHBORHOOD BLOCKS WERE ADOPTED BY VOLUNTEERS WHO KEPT THEM CLEAN ON AN ONGOING BASIS, USING FREE SUPPLIES AND RESOURCES FROM KIB. TOGETHER, PEOPLE REMOVED MORE THAN 536 TONS OF LITTER FROM INDIANAPOLIS STREETS, ALLEYS, GREENSPACES, AND WATERWAYS. KIB'S GREENSPACE PROGRAM, WHICH IS COMMITTED TO CREATING VIBRANT PLACES AND COMMUNITIES, TRANSFORMED VACANT LOTS AND UNDERUSED SPACES INTO NATURAL, BEAUTIFUL, AND FUNCTIONAL POCKET PARKS. KIB CREATED THREE NEW GREENSPACES IN 2019 AND HELPED PROJECT PARTNERS MAINTAIN 48 GREENSPACES CREATED IN PAST YEARS.

YOUTH PROGRAMMING: KIB'S YOUTH PROGRAMS INCLUDE THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION AND THE YOUTH TREE TEAM (YTT). THROUGH THE YTT PROGRAM, 83 HIGH SCHOOL AND COLLEGE STUDENTS PLAYED A VITAL ROLE IN ENSURING THE SURVIVAL OF KIB'S TREES THE FIRST THREE YEARS AFTER PLANTING. IN 2019, THESE YOUTH CARED FOR 14,620 TREES, INCLUDING WATERING, MULCHING AND STAKING. THE YOUTH EARNED WORK SKILLS CERTIFICATES AND PARTICIPATED IN ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES, SUCH AS LEARNING FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT, VISITING TREE NURSERIES, CAMPING, AND GOING ON COLLEGE TOURS. THROUGH KIB'S EDUCATION PROGRAM (FORMERLY GREENKIDS), 10 ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS WERE ENGAGED THROUGH PRESENTATIONS AND HANDS-ON LEARNING ACTIVITIES LED BY KIB STAFF.
