EVERY YEAR, THE NCAA AND ITS MEMBERS EQUIP NEARLY HALF A MILLION STUDENT-ATHLETES WITH SKILLS TO SUCCEED ON THE PLAYING FIELD, IN THE CLASSROOM AND THROUGHOUT LIFE. THEY DO THAT BY PRIORITIZING ACADEMICS, WELL-BEING AND FAIRNESS.
THE NATIONAL COLLEGIATE ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION IS A MEMBER-LED ORGANIZATION DEDICATED TO THE WELL-BEING AND LIFELONG SUCCESS OF COLLEGE ATHLETES. WITH MORE THAN 1,100 MEMBER COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES, THE NCAA IS UNITED AROUND ONE GOAL, CREATING OPPORTUNITIES FOR COLLEGE ATHLETES.
THE NCAA GOVERNS AND ADMINISTERS COLLEGE SPORTS FOR MORE THAN 1,100 MEMBER COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES. THE NCAA OPERATES THROUGH A GOVERNANCE STRUCTURE, EMPOWERING SCHOOLS IN EACH DIVISION TO GUIDE AND ENHANCE THEIR PARTICIPATION IN COLLEGE SPORTS. THE BOARD OF GOVERNORS, LED BY PRESIDENTS AND CHANCELLORS OF MEMBER SCHOOLS, SERVES AS THE SENIOR GOVERNING BODY OF THE NCAA. OUR DIVERSE MEMBERSHIP INCLUDES SCHOOLS WITH STUDENT BODIES THAT RANGE FROM HUNDREDS OF STUDENTS TO TENS OF THOUSANDS. THE CURRENT THREE-DIVISION STRUCTURE CREATES FAIR SPORTS COMPETITION FOR LIKE-MINDED INSTITUTIONS AND PROVIDES STUDENT-ATHLETES WITH A WIDE SPECTRUM OF OPPORTUNITIES TO PARTICIPATE IN CHAMPIONSHIP EVENTS. THE NCAA SUPPORTS STUDENT-ATHLETE SUCCESS BY ENSURING STUDENTS ARE PREPARED FOR THE COLLEGE CLASSROOM WHEN THEY ENTER SCHOOL AND THAT THEY CONTINUE TO PROGRESS TOWARD A DEGREE WHILE PLAYING SPORTS. THE NCAA NATIONAL OFFICE ALSO PROMOTES THE PHYSICAL AND MENTAL WELL-BEING OF STUDENT-ATHLETES THROUGH THE NCAA SPORT SCIENCE INSTITUTE, DRUG TESTING AND INSURANCE PROGRAMS. STUDENT-ATHLETES BENEFIT FROM NCAA PROGRAMS SUPPORTING LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES, INTERNSHIPS, DEGREE COMPLETION AND POSTGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS. THE NCAA FUNDS ACADEMIC OPPORTUNITIES AND FINANCIALLY ASSISTS STUDENT-ATHLETES IN NEED OF EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS, CLOTHING AND EMERGENCY TRAVEL EXPENSES.
THE NCAA ADMINISTERS 90 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS ANNUALLY. MORE THAN 52,500 STUDENT-ATHLETES EXPERIENCE THE THRILL OF PARTICIPATING IN AN NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP EVERY YEAR. THE NCAA'S CHAMPIONSHIP EXPENSES SUPPORT ESSENTIAL OPERATIONS AT MORE THAN 800 SITES, TEAM TRANSPORTATION, PER DIEM COSTS, PROGRAMS SALUTING STUDENT-ATHLETES, SPORT COMMITTEE EXPENSES AND FAN-APPRECIATION EVENTS.
