Humane Society for Hamilton County is saving lives, educating communities and completing families by providing a compassionate and healthy environment for the homeless animals of Hamilton County, Indiana, until they can be placed into permanent loving homes.
Operation of a no-kill, compassionate and healthy animal shelter for homeless and unwanted animals of Hamilton County, Indiana, housing in excess of 300 cats and dogs on any given day. The priority is to reunite animals with their original family, or to place them into new loving homes. Approximately 3,300 animals were received during 2019 with a placement rate of 91% adjusted for illness and temperament. The Humane Society for Hamilton County promotes responsible pet ownership and reduces suffering caused by pet overpopulation and animal cruelty by offering counseling to pet owners to address behavioral issues and spaying/neutering, vaccinating and microchipping all animals before they are placed into homes.
The Survivor Program gives animals arriving at the shelter in need of immediate medical care the life saving treatment they need. The Survivor Program also gives animals with life threatening illnesses or injuries, such as heartworm disease, Parvovirus,or accident victims, a second chance at life. 100% of the donations made to the Survivor Program go toward providing the medical care needed to save precious lives.
Pets Healing Vets program pairs qualifying veterans returning from active duty with symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or Traumatic Brain Injury with a carefully selected shelter dog or cat in need of a home. The goal is to improve the emotional wellbeing of Indiana veterans. Program facilitators have found that veterans often relate to shelter animals who are themselves often misunderstood and dealing with anxieties associated with fear and abuse. The program serves veterans throughout the state of Indiana. Twenty three veterans are participating in the program with animals placed with these veterans.
