Our mission is to inspire and enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to realize their full potential as productive, caring, and responsible citizens. We help young people ages 5-18 through evidence-based youth development programming that emphasizes Character & Leadership, Education & Career Development, Health & life Skills, the Arts, and Sports, Fitness & Recreation. As an informal out-of-school learning space, our club has the opportunity to offer both remediation and enrichment, all while inviting youth to discover and pursue passions that connect them to future opportunities.
At Boys & Girls Club of St. Joseph County we have a bold vision: that success is within reach of every child. We believe every girl and boy deserves a safe place to learn and grow; life-enhancing programs, character development experiences, and hope and opportunity for the future.
We serve more than 1,100 at-risk youth each year, reaching an average of 500 children daily with over 1,400 members. In St. Joseph County, 19% of our children live at or below the state poverty level. 72% of our Club members come from single parent homes, and 9% of our Club members that attend our flagship O.C. Carmichael Jr. Youth Center (O.C.) are homeless. Although our annual programming costs are well over $1,000 per member, we understand that the population we are serving is under the poverty line and offer our program at a cost of $50 per member for the entire school year. No child is turned away because of an inability to pay, and nearly 40% of all memberships are entirely subsidized through a blended funding strategy.
