Our mission is to develop a local food network focused on reducing food insecurity in St. Joseph, Elkhart and Marshall County. Our primary program is a frozen meal backpack program primarily for students in K-2nd grade. Our backpack program fills the 68 hour gap from Friday at lunch to Monday at breakfast. We currently serve 600 students who are in South Bend, Elkhart, Wa-Nee, Plymouth Community Schools and Success Academy. Over the past year, our program grew from 400 backpacks or 2,400 meals per week to 600 backpacks or 3,600 meals per week. Our goal by January of 2021 is to reach 1,000 backpacks or 6,000 meals per week. During the COVID19 crisis we were able to continue to serve all 600 of our students and serve thousands of additional students and their families. For an 8 week period in April and May we were producing 16,000 meals per week. Due to the crisis, we continue to serve 5,400 meals per week with our school partners, the Boys & Girls Club, the VA, and other agencies.
Cultivate is devoted to organizing our community resources to fight hunger, reduce food waste and provide culinary education through food rescue mission.
Our food rescue operation was initially modeled after 2nd Helpings in Indianapolis. Cultivate serves as a middleman between large food service businesses which prepare food that is not served and people who are food insecure in our community. Our twist on the 2nd Helpings model is that we distribute the already prepared food in two ways: individual frozen meals (like a frozen Meals on Wheels) and in bulk to local social service agencies who feed the food insecure. We are able to provide as one client calls it, real food, in a convenient easy to store and prepare package that is more nutritious then canned and boxed items. We not only feed hungry people but help protect our environment from unnecessary food waste which is the largest single component of our Nation's landfills.
Cultivate is filling the 68-hour, weekend gap that a child may go without food. The program provides 6 healthy meals to children in need every Friday. Cultivate is currently providing 400 backpacks to hungry children in 3 different counties in Indiana (St. Joseph, Elkhart and Marshall).
