Inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experienced based curriculum which creatively integrates running.
In 2019, Girls on the Run hosted two 5K events for Girls on the Run participants and community members for the Greater Baton Rouge, Acadiana and Northshore areas. The 5K is the culminating event for the 10-week Girls on the Run program and is centered around the girls and their families and on the celebration of mental, emotional, social, and physical health. These events are open to the public. In 2019, a total of 2460 people participated in the 5K events. In addition, 250 people served as volunteers at the 5K events.
Girls on the Run is a physical activity-based positive youth development PYD program that is designed to enhance girls social, psychological and physical skills and behaviors to successfully navigate life experiences. The programs evidence-based curriculum places an emphasis on developing competence, confidence, connection, character, caring and contribution in young girls through lessons that incorporate running and other physical activities. The life skills curriculum is delivered by caring and competent coaches who are trained to teach lessons as intended. Girls on the Run, a non-profit organization with councils in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, has served over 2 million girls since its inception in 1996. The Girls on the Run South Louisiana council covers 18 parishes. In 2019, program services were provided at 63 locations serving a total of 968 girls. 252 women and men served as coach mentors, implementing the organizations program curriculum.
