Friends of Lafitte Greenway works to build, program, and promote the Lafitte Greenway as a great public space.
People - Friends of Lafitte Greenway (Friends) works to accomplish our vision: a healthy and vibrant greenway that connects people to nature, their destinations, and each other. The goal of Friends' People sector programming is to create a community-oriented and highly-used public space: (a) through programming that engages diverse communities, and (b) through design, operations, and maintenance that serve the community's needs. In 2019, over 8,000 people participated in Friends programs including free outdoor fitness classes, Halloween and holiday celebrations, arts and cultural events, and Hike Fest. Through our public-private partnership with the City, we advanced improvements to the built environment including construction of a new playground, community pavilion, and clubhouse. In 2019, we debuted the Ephemera art exhibit, and implemented the Ambassadors Program. Through a monthly e-newsletter and regular presentations to community organizations, Friends works to keep the public informed and connected to the Greenway.
Nature - Friends of Lafitte Greenway's Nature Programs work to ensure that the Greenway is a well-maintained ecosystem that is thriving, attractive and sustainable. Working with over 600 volunteers in 2019, we helped care for the Greenway's environmental and stormwater features, mulching trees and removing invasive species from bioswales. In addition to caring for the Greenway's environmental features, Friends educated the community about sustainable water management practices and our connection to the environment, and advised the City's maintenance team in green infrastructure maintenance strategies.
Transportation - Friends of Lafitte Greenway?s Transportation Programs work to ensure that the Greenway serves as a transportation connector, safely linking neighborhoods and locations along the trail. Safety enhancements and education help to ensure that accessing and using the Greenway is safe, convenient, and fun. In 2019, Friends moved ahead the Trail Completion Campaign to complete the final half mile of Greenway trail to Canal Boulevard. We engaged with partners in the Complete Streets Coalition to advance the Moving New Orleans Bike Plan. In 2019, we worked with the City to bring safety call boxes to the Greenway.
