TO PRESERVE, PRESENT AND PROMOTE LOUISIANA'S HISTORY AND CULTURE THROUGH THE PROVISION OF FUNDING AND PROGRAM SUPPORT SERVICES FOR THE LOUISIANA STATE MUSEUM (LSM)- A GOVERNMENT OPERATED INSTITUTION LACKING ADEQUATE RESOURCES FOR ITS FACILITIES, COLLECTIONS, ARCHIVES, EXHIBITS, EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING AND COMMUNITY OUTREACH. THE LOUISIANA MUSEUM FOUNDATION (LMF) SERVES AS LSM'S AND THE NEW ORLEANS JAZZ MUSEUM'S PRIMARY SUPPORT PARTNER FOR COMMUNITY CONTRIBUTIONS AND GRANTS AND ALSO PROVIDES DIRECT PROGRAM DELIVERY IN PARTNERSHIP WITH LSM.
TO ENABLE SUPPORT, ADMINISTER FUNDING, AND RAISE AWARENESS FOR THE LOUISIANA STATE MUSEUM.
EXHIBITION SUPPORT: THE LMF HELPED MAKE POSSIBLE THE FOLLOWING EXHIBITIONS AT LSM PROPERTIES:1. "THE BARONESS DE PONTALBA AND THE RISE OF JACKSON SQUARE" (CABILDO, NEW ORLEANS) A TRICENTENNIAL EXHIBITION, TELLING THE STORY OF THE 18TH CENTURY CONTRIBUTIONS OF DON ANDRES ALMONESTER AND THE 19TH CENTURY CONTRIBUTIONS OF HIS DAUGHTER, MICAELA ALMONESTER, BARONESS DE PONTALBA. THIS FATHER-DAUGHTER DUO WAS INSTRUMENTAL IN THE PRESERVATION AND ULTIMATE CREATION OF THE HEART OF NEW ORLEANS-THE VIEUX CARRE'S JACKSON SQUARE. THE LMF OPENED THIS EXHIBITION AT ITS INAUGURAL FOUNDERS BALL AND HOSTED THE HISTORIC RETURN OF THE PONTALBA FAMILY FROM FRANCE TO THE CITY OF THE FAMILY'S COLONIAL LOUISIANA ROOTS.2. "WE LOVE YOU, NEW ORLEANS" (CABILDO, NEW ORLEANS) AS PART OF LSM'S TRI-CENTENNIAL ACTIVITIES, THIS EXHIBITION CELEBRATES THE PEOPLE, PLACES AND THINGS THAT MAKE NEW ORLEANS ONE OF THE NATION'S MOST UNIQUE CITIES TO VISITORS AND RESIDENTS ALIKE AND FEATURES ONE HUNDRED ARTIFACTS HIGHLIGHTING THE UNIQUELY NEW ORLEANS VERSIONS OF ARCHITECTURE, FOOD AND DRINK, MUSIC, NIGHTLIFE AND MORE. 3. "RECOVERED MEMORIES: SPAIN, NEW ORLEANS, AND THE SUPPORT FOR THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION" (CABILDO, NEW ORLEANS) LSM'S KICKOFF EXHIBITION FOR NEW ORLEANS' TRI-CENTENNIAL YEAR, THIS 7,000 SQUARE FOOT EXHIBIT FEATURED HUNDREDS OF HISTORIC ARTIFACTS, DOCUMENTS AND WORKS OF ART, MUCH OF WHICH WAS ON LOAN FROM INSTITUTIONS AND PRIVATE COLLECTIONS FROM SPAIN. THE EXHIBIT WAS ALSO THE CATALYST FOR A MAKEOVER OF THE CABILDO, AND WHILE IT CAME DOWN IN THE PRIOR FISCAL YEAR, IT STILL HAD CLOSE OUT ACTIVITIES IN THE FISCAL YEAR OF THIS REPORT.4. "GRAND ILLUSIONS: THE HISTORY AND ARTISTRY OF GAY CARNIVAL IN NEW ORLEANS" (PRESBYTERE, NEW ORLEANS) THE FIRST-OF-ITS-KIND COMPREHENSIVE EXHIBITION ON THE HISTORY OF GAY CARNIVAL WHICH BRINGS TOGETHER MORE THAN TWO HUNDRED ARTIFACTS INCLUDING POSTERS AND POSTER ARTWORK, BALL INVITATIONS AND FAVORS, COSTUME DESIGNS, A DOZEN AMAZING COSTUMES AND NEWLY DIGITIZED FILMS OF GAY BALLS FROM THE 1960S AND 1970S.5. "THE WILDEST: LOUIS PRIMA COMES HOME" (THE NEW ORLEANS JAZZ MUSEUM AT THE OLD U.S. MINT, NEW ORLEANS) AN EXHIBIT FEATURING SON OF NEW ORLEANS TRUMPETER, SINGER, SONGWRITER AND PERFORMER LOUIS PRIMA, WHOSE PERSONA CONQUERED NEW YORK, LAS VEGAS, HOLLYWOOD, AND POINTS IN BETWEEN. THE INTERACTIVE EXHIBIT FEATURES PHOTOS, RECORDINGS, INSTRUMENTS AND STAGE WEAR OF PRIMA.6. "ME GOT FIYO: THE PROFESSOR LONGHAIR CENTENNIAL" (THE NEW ORLEANS JAZZ MUSEUM AT THE OLD U.S. MINT, NEW ORLEANS) AN EXHIBITION CELEBRATING THE MOST BELOVED AND INFLUENTIAL PIANIST IN NEW ORLEANS HISTORY: HENRY ROLAND BYRD AKA PROFESSOR LONGHAIR. THE EXHIBIT STARTS WITH HIS ORIGINS AND DEVELOPMENT TO HIS EARLY HITS, TO HIS 1970S COMEBACK, HIS UNTIMELY DEATH, AND HIS CONTINUAL PRESENCE IN NEW ORLEANS.7. "DRUMSVILLE: EVOLUTION OF THE NEW ORLEANS BEAT" (THE NEW ORLEANS JAZZ MUSEUM AT THE OLD U.S. MINT, NEW ORLEANS) AN EXHIBITION EXPLORING THE ROLE OF PERCUSSION AND RHYTHM IN NEW ORLEANS AND HOW THE INNOVATIVE DRUMMERS FROM THE CRESCENT CITY CONTINUALLY CHANGED THAT ROLE AND TOOK IT AROUND THE PLANET. THE EXHIBIT FEATURES A BEAUTIFUL SAMPLING OF PHOTOGRAPHS AND DRUMS FROM EVERYONE FROM WARREN "BABY" DODDS AND JACK LAINE TO JAMES BLACK, STANTON MOORE, HERLIN RILEY, AND SHANNON POWELL.8. "FROM THE OPERA HOUSE TO THE WAREHOUSE" (THE NEW ORLEANS JAZZ MUSEUM AT THE OLD U.S. MINT, NEW ORLEANS) A TRI-CENTENNIAL EXHIBIT TUNES INTO THE SEMINAL RHYTHMS OF CONGO SQUARE AND THE EARLIEST DAYS OF JAZZ, LATTER-DAY LOUIS ARMSTRONG AND THE BIRTH OF AMERICAN FESTIVAL CULTURE, THE INTERNATIONAL HIP-HOP TAKEOVER OF CASH MONEY AND NO LIMIT, THE EVOLUTION OF A BRASS-BAND RIFF AS MOBILE AS THE SECOND-LINE PARADES THAT BRING IT TO LIFE, AND MORE.
COLLECTIONS & MUSEUM CONSERVATION SUPPORT: LMF PROVIDED SUPPORT FOR THE CONSERVATION OF ARTIFACTS IN THE MUSEUM'S COLLECTIONS.LMF CONTINUED TO PROVIDE FUNDING THROUGH AN INSTITUTE OF MUSEUM AND LIBRARY SERVICES GRANT FOR A PROJECT TO FULLY CATALOGUE, DIGITIZE, AND DISSEMINATE LSM'S EXTENSIVE NEW ORLEANS JAZZ COLLECTION, WHICH INCLUDES MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS, TEXTILES/COSTUMES, PHOTOGRAPHS, PICTORIAL OBJECTS, EPHEMERA AND SHEET MUSIC.LMF CONTINUED TO PROVIDE FUNDING THROUGH A MAJOR PRIVATE DONATION AND THEN A GRANT FROM THE PRITZKER FOUNDATION THAT ENABLED THE LSM TO KEEP THE READING ROOM OF LSM'S LOUISIANA HISTORICAL CENTER, WHICH INCLUDES THE JAZZ COLLECTION, OPEN TO THE PUBLIC TO ENSURE PUBLIC ACCESS TO THE MAPS, MANUSCRIPTS, AND OTHER RESEARCH MATERIALS HOUSED IN THE ARCHIVE. THE READING ROOM WAS NAMED IN HONOR OF LSM JAZZ CURATOR EMERITUS DONALD MARQUIS THROUGH THE NEW GRANT.LMF PROVIDED FUNDING THROUGH VARIOUS DONATIONS TO CONSERVE AND DIGITIZE FILMS AND VHS CASSETTES IN THE LSM COLLECTION FOR USE IN THE GRAND ILLUSIONS: THE HISTORY AND ARTISTRY OF GAY CARNIVAL IN NEW ORLEANS EXHIBITION.LMF PROVIDED FUNDING THROUGH VARIOUS DONATIONS TO CONSERVE MARDI GRAS CARNIVAL COSTUMES.LMF PROVIDED FUNDS THROUGH A NATIONAL FILM PRESERVATION FOUNDATION GRANT TO DIGITIZE AND CREATE PUBLIC ACCESS COPIES OF 9 DON PERRY FILMS FROM THE NEW ORLEANS INTERNATIONAL JAZZ FESTIVALS OF 1968 AND 1969.AS PART OF ONGOING MAINTENANCE AND THE PRESERVATION OF THE HISTORIC CABILDO, THIS FACILITIES' HARDWOOD AND BRICK FLOORS WERE RESTORED THROUGH FUNDING ADMINISTERED BY LMF.
PUBLIC PROGRAMS, EDUCATION OUTREACH, AND MARKETING: THE LMF HELPED MAKE POSSIBLE THE LOUISIANA STATE MUSEUM'S DELIVERY OF PUBLIC AND EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH PROGRAMMING AND MARKETING OF MUSEUM SERVICES, COLLECTIONS, FACILITIES, AND PROJECTS. LMF ALSO COORDINATED MUSEUM MARKETING EVENTS.LMF CONTINUED ITS RESPONSIBILITY OF CONTRACTING WITH ALL PERFORMERS AND HANDLING CONCESSION DONATIONS FOR LSM'S MOST POPULAR PUBLIC OUTREACH PROGRAM-MUSIC AT THE MINT AND HANDLED CONCESSIONS FOR OTHER OUTREACH PROGRAMS AS REQUESTED. LMF PROVIDED FUNDING THROUGH SEVERAL GRANTS AND PRIVATE DONATIONS FOR MUSICAL ACTS, LECTURES, AND PROGRAMMING FOR THE DOWNRIVER FESTIVAL, HELD AT THE NEW ORLEANS JAZZ MUSEUM AT THE OLD U.S. MINT.LMF ORGANIZED AND HOSTED EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS ASSOCIATED WITH THE BARONESS DE PONTALBA AND THE RISE OF JACKSON SQUARE EXHIBITION INCLUDING: A LUNCHEON FEATURING A LECTURE BY PONTALBA DESCENDANT, PIERRE DE PONTALBA; THREE OTHER GUEST LECTURES FEATURING THE EXHIBITION'S CURATOR RANDOLPH DELEHANTY, PH.D., TWO FEMALE MODERN ARTISTS ON THEIR ARTISTIC PORTRAYALS OF THE BARONESS, AND CANDICE NANCEL OF THE HOTEL DE PONTALBA OF THE AMERICAN EMBASSY IN PARIS; WITH AN IMMERSIVE DINNER THEATER EXPERIENCE FEATURING TWO PERIOD ACTORS EXPLORING THE TUMULTUOUS RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE BARONESS AND HER FATHER-IN-LAW AS THE GRAND FINALE TO THE LAST LECTURE; A DRAMATIC READING OF ACTUAL LETTERS BETWEEN THE HISTORIC BARONESS DE PONTALBA AND HER FAMILY AND CORRESPONDENCE ON THE MAKING OF THE EXHIBIT; AND THREE DRAMATIC PERFORMANCES OF THE BARONESS UNDRESSED, A ONE-WOMAN THEATRICAL PERFORMANCE FEATURING ACCLAIMED ACTRESS DIANA SHORTES.
