Helping deliver leading edge equipment, services and technology, the Team Gleason Foundation provides ALS patients with the tools to allow people living with ALS to communicate, interact, and be valuable. Technology and equipment have advanced over the past decade but these services can be taken even further. With these advanced tools, we feel that ALS patients will choose to live productive lives. The Foundation works with creative companies like Microsoft and TOBII DynaVox to develop voice creation and hands-free software and technology. The Foundation provided $57,780 in financial assistance to the Team Gleason House at St. Margaret's Nursing Home. The facility whose technology was funded by the Foundation was dedicated in 2015 and provided 2,132 patient days of specialized care to 8 patients in 2019.The Foundation maintains contact with ALS families receiving specialized equipment and recycles the equipment to new patients when the equipment is no longer needed. In 2019, $1,024094 of such equipment was repurposed to 240 new patients. In 2019 the U.S. Congress awarded Steve Gleason the Congressional Gold Medal -- the highest honor Congress can bestow upon a civilian -- for his efforts in raising awareness of ALS. Gleason is the first NFL player ever honored with the Congressional Gold Medal. The Foundation initiated a respite care program in 2018 to provide skilled nursing care to assist families caring for an ALS patient. These families received over 6,865 hours of such assistence in 2019 at a cost to the Foundation of $147,377. The Foundation's voice banking service allowed 458 patients in the early stages of the disease to record their voices for later use when normal speech would no longer be possible. In 2019 Team Gleason partnered with Google on a research project, called Project Euphonia. Project Euphonia is Google's early-stage research effort with a two part goal. To improve speech recognition software for smarthome and other devices so people with impaired speech can be understood by-and access-this technology. To create an application that can transcribe someone's speech in real-time to allow individuals to read what the individual with dysarthria is saying.
