To preserve the historic integrity of the Fargo Theatre while expanding the Theatre's ability to meet the artistic and entertainment needs of increasingly diverse audiences, performers and filmmakers.(Continued on Schedule O)To effectively maintain a state of the art screen and stage for critically acclaimed film and classic film, live theatre, special events and tours. One of the missions of the Fargo Theatre is to meet the artistic and entertainment needs of increasingly diverse audiences, performers and filmmakers. The Fargo Theatre screened 31 first run films, 9 classic films, 12 children's film series titles, provided area organizations a place to screen local films, hosted the FM LBGT Film Festival, and hosted 69 live events. The diversity of films and live events provides the community a wide selection of independent and mainstream performances to view. The Fargo Theatre is typically open 364 days a year allowing the community to view a variety of films in a historical setting and to host a variety of live events. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Fargo Theatre closed its doors on March 18. (Continued on Schedule O)As of the date of this report, the Theatre is still closed. The Fargo Theatre usually averages more than 67,000 people each year in the different movie/events. Leading up to the closure, overall event numbers and attendance were up, but the final year attendance was reduced this year due to the pandemic. Total attendance for this fiscal year is estimated to be 61,000. The long-term objective is to continue to meet the artistic and entertainment needs of the community as the community continues to grow.
The Fargo Film Festival receives films submissions from around the world to be juried by community volunteers. The goal of the film festival is to celebrate film artistry while connecting local audiences to innovative, independent cinema. The 2020 festival received 312 film submissions. The juries selected 90 films to play as a part of the festival. Typically, the Fargo Film Festival draws audience members from all over the region. Approximately 3,100 patrons attended the 2019 event. Artists including filmmakers/actors/producers usually come to Fargo to support their screenings and interact with audiences. (Continued on Schedule O)These appearances allowed for formal educational opportunities through panel discussions and workshops, as well as informal opportunities for audience members and local filmmakers to socialize with these burgeoning artists. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 Fargo Film Festival was cancelled on March 12, just days before it was scheduled to open. A streaming version of the festival was held in August 2020. This virtual festival included special conversations with film artists from around the world. The festival's long-term objective is to continue providing an exhibition platform for independent filmmakers while giving local audiences the chance to see unique, original, and artistically relevant motion pictures.
