Methodist Medical Center ("Methodist") first opened as an Army hospital in 1943. Now, 75 years later, the hospital is an Advanced Primary Stroke Center and provides medical specialties ranging from cardiology and orthopedics to oncology and wound care. The hospital is best known for its services in orthopedics, cardiology, oncology, rehabilitation therapy services, sleep diagnostics, and wound treatment. It is listed as one of the IBM Watson's Top 50 Cardiovascular Hospitals in the country, and received a designation as a High-Performing Hospital for Coronary Artery Bypass Graft ("CABG") heart procedures by U.S. News & World Report.Methodist's board-certified orthopedic surgeons are skilled in diagnosing and treating bone, muscle, and joint disorders. Specialty areas include total hip and knee replacement, spinal surgeries, fractures, complex rotator cuff/shoulder repairs and hand reconstruction. The hospital treated 4,990 orthopedic surgery patients in 2019. Using a series of best-practice guidelines, the hospital treats patients efficiently and effectively for optimal outcomes.Methodist offers a full continuum of heart-related care and services, including open-heart surgery. Methodist opened one of the first chest pain centers in the area. The AACVPR-accredited cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation program has a 5,000-square-foot facility and offers an individualized plan of monitored exercise and education in a medically supervised environment.PUTTING PATIENTS FIRSTMethodist is certified under The Joint Commission's Gold Seal of Approval and the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association's Heart-Check mark for Advanced Certification for Primary Stroke Centers. The Gold Seal of Approval and the Heart-Check mark represent symbols of quality from their respective organizations for excellence in stroke care. The hospital is also a member of Covenant Health's stroke hospital network, which links Covenant Health's member hospitals in providing our region with access to rapid diagnosis and treatment of stroke. Methodist's Wound Treatment Center team of physician specialists and nurses help patients with conditions such as diabetic wounds, venous stasis ulcers and radiation wounds. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy ("HBOT") is one of several advanced treatment options available at the center. HBOT stimulates the formation of new blood vessels, improves flow of oxygen to tissues and increases formation of fibrous tissues, helping patients recover from non-healing wounds. Methodist's Family Birthing Center is recognized by the Tennessee Department of Health and Tennessee Hospital Association as one of Tennessee's "BEST" places for babies to be born. The "BEST for Babies" award focuses on hospital excellence around breastfeeding, early elective delivery reduction, and safe sleep for Tennessee babies. Methodist operates three Hospitality Houses which provide free temporary lodging to cancer patients and their families who must travel to Oak Ridge for extended treatment. The houses also are available to other patients needing long-term treatment as space allows. IMPROVING THE COMMUNITY'S QUALITY OF LIFE THROUGH BETTER HEALTHMethodist offers a variety of classes, support groups and outreach programs for the community, including childbirth classes, exercise classes, smoking cessation, and safe sitter classes. Its periodic "Health Night on the Town" programs are free to the public and present physicians and other healthcare professionals discussing healthcare topics of community interest.
