THE FOUNDATION'S PRIMARY PROGRAM IS TO ADMINISTER DONOR ADVISED FUNDS. TO ACCOMPLISH THIS, THE FOUNDATION RECEIVES AND ACCEPTS PROPERTY TO BE USED EXCLUSIVELY FOR RELIGIOUS, CHARITABLE, SCIENTIFIC, LITERARY, OR EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES PRIMARILY IN AND FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE COMMUNITY OF MEMPHIS AND SHELBY COUNTY, AND THE VICINITY THEREOF.

GRANTS & INITIATIVES (FD 10, 11, 12, 14) STRIVES TO INITIATE OR TAKE A LEAD ROLE IN CREATING AND FUNDING PROGRAMS THAT IMPACT THE GREATER MEMPHIS COMMUNITY OR METROPOLITAN AREA. TYPICALLY, THESE PROGRAMS WILL BE OF COMMUNITYWIDE SIGNIFICANCE. INCREASING PUBLIC AWARENESS ABOUT A PARTICULAR ISSUE AND ATTEMPTING TO INVOLVE DONORS AND OTHER FUNDERS ABOUT A PARTICULAR ISSUE ARE GOALS OF THESE GRANTS. PROJECTS RANGE FROM A FIVE-YEAR GRANT TO MATCH FUNDING FROM THE BILL & MELINDA GATES FOUNDATION TO SUPPORT THE TEACHERS EFFECTIVENESS INITIATIVES THROUGH SHELBY COUNTY SCHOOLS TO SUPPORTING A FINANCIAL PROGRAM TO COMBAT PAYDAY LENDING.

THE PURPOSE OF THE STRENGTHENING NONPROFITS PROGRAM (FD 13) IS TO PROVIDE SUPPORT FOR NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS: 1) INTERMEDIARY AGENCIES THAT PROVIDE TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE TO OTHER NONPROFITS; AND 2) CAPACITY BUILDING FUNDING TO SUPPORT PROGRAMS BASED ON THE OUTCOMES OF COMPREHENSIVE PLANNING PROCESSES CONDUCTED BY BOARD AND STAFF. FUNDING WAS USED FOR GENERAL OPERATING SUPPORT FOR ORGANIZATIONS LIKE THE HOMELESS INTERMEDIARY THAT HELPS SECURE NATIONAL FUNDING AND PROVIDES TRAINING TO HOMELESS SERVICE PROVIDERS.
