THE LEE BRENNEISEN FOUNDATION PARTNERS WITH SCHOOLS AND COMMUNITIES IN KENYA AND OTHER DEVELOPING NATIONS TO PROMOTE EDUCATION AND SOCIAL ENTERPRISE. THE FOUNDATON HAS DEVELOPED EIGHT ECO-FRIENDLY LEARNING MODULES TO EMPOWER STUDENTS FOR FUTURE OF CRITICAL THINKING THROUGH ACTIVITY BASED LEARNING.
THE PURPOSE OF THE FOUNDATION IS TO BUILD SCHOOLS, COMMUNITIES AND WOMEN'S COOPERATIVES IN AFRICA SPECIFICALLY NAROK COUNTY, ONE OF KENYA'S LARGEST AND GENERALLY LESS DEVELOPED COUNTIES. THE FOUNDATON HAS DEVELOPED EIGHT ECO-FRIENDLY LEARNING MODULES TO EMPOWER STUDENTS FOR FUTURE OF CRITICAL THINKING THROUGH ACTIVITY BASED LEARNING.
THE BASIS FOR THIS CLEAN WATER AND HEALTH LEARN MODULE IS "WATER IS LIFE, AND THE FOCUS IS ON CLEAN WATER AND SANITATION. THE FOUNDATION COLLECTS MORE THAN 1,100,000 LITERS OF WATER IN PARTNERSHIPS WITH 16 COMMUNITIES. COMMUNITY WATER PONDS COLLECT AT LEAST 22 MILLION LITERS MORE AND SERVE LITERALLY TENS OF THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE. A WATER CONSERVATION AND EMERGENCY PROGRAM IS IMPLEMENTED FOR EACH SCHOOL COMMUNITY, INCLUDING AMOUNTS FOR DRINKING, WASHING, COOKING AND IRRIGATION OVER PERIODS OF EXPECTED DROUGHT. PRIMARY SCHOOL STUDENTS WORK IN TEAMS TO LEARN ABOUT CONSERVATION PLANS AND WATER AWARENESS. THE FOUNDATION COMPLETED CONSTRUCTION OF A 110,000-LITER CONCRETE WATER CATCHMENT TANK AT OLE NTUTU ARID ZONE PRIMARY SCHOOL IN OLOLOLUNG'A, KENYA. THIS IS THE LARGEST WATER TANK IN ANY KENYAN SCHOOL. ADDITIONALLY, A HILLSIDE COLLECTION FACILITY AND SEVERAL IRRIGATION RESERVOIRS FOR FOOD SECURITY WERE CREATED. THE FOUNDATION HELPS SCHOOLS GROW THEIR OWN FOOD BY PLANTING "KITCHEN GARDENS." THE FOOD SECURITY LEARNING MODULE TEACHES ALL ASPECTS OF ORGANIC GARDENING. THE FOUNDATION PROVIDES ACCESS TO RESOURCES, INSTRUCTIONS, DROUGHT RESISTANT SEED VARIETIES AND ORGANIC ADDITIVES THAT HELP SOILS RETAIN MOISTURE. STUDENTS ARE LEARNING SOCIAL ENTERPRISE THROUGH GROWING AND SELLING PRODUCE INCLUDING TO THEIR SCHOOLS AS PART OF SCHOOL FEEDING AND NUTRITION PROGRAMS (RECEIVING CREDIT RATHER THAN MONEY). SURPLUS PRODUCE IS SOLD TO THE PUBLIC, AND PROCEEDS ARE USED TO BUY BOOKS, COMPUTERS, AND OTHER CRUCIAL SCHOOL SUPPLIES. THE INITIAL DEMONSTRATION FARM IS AT OLE NAEKU PRIMARY SCHOOL. AT THIS LOCATION, THE FOUNDATION HAS WORKED WITH THE MINISTRIES OF EDUCATION, AGRICULTURE AND OTHERS TO DEVELOP COST-EFFECTIVE PLANS FOR ORGANIC GARDENING TECHNIQUE. DEFORESTATION THREATENS WORLD ECOSYSTEMS IN THE MOST PROFOUND AND DEVASTATING WAYS. LOSS OF FORESTS CURRENTLY AFFECTS RAIN PATTERNS WITH RESULTING DROUGHT, ENDANGERING FORESTS IN AFRICA AND ELSEWHERE. IT IS ESTIMATED THAT 40% OF EARTH'S CARBON EMISSIONS ARE FROM TREE CUTTING. THE REFORESTATION AND CARBON AWARENESS LEARNING MODULE FOCUSES ON THE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF CARBON AND OXYGEN PRODUCTION IN FORESTS. IT PROVIDES "HOW TO" GUIDANCE FOR TREE NURSERIES AND ACCESS TO MARKETS FOR SAPLINGS. THE FOUNDATION'S TREE NURSERY HAS STARTED MORE THAN 25,000 TREES, AND TRANSPLANTED THE FIRST 8,000 INTO GROWING SACKS. IN 2019, THE FOUNDATION PLANTED APPROXIMATELY 500,000 TREE SEEDS YIELDING APPROXIMATELY 50,000 TREES. SCHOOLS CAN EARN INCOME FROM THE SALE OF TREES. PROFIT FROM A MATURED TREE CAN EXCEED 10,000% OF COSTS OVER 7 TO 10 YEARS.
AS PASTORALISTS, MAASAI ARE UNIQUELY INVOLVED IN LIVESTOCK AT EVERY LEVEL. IN FACT, WEALTH IS MEASURED IN COWS, GOATS, AND SHEEP. IN 2019, THE FOUNDATION FOCUSED ON LIVESTOCK BANKING, EXECUTING MEMORANDA OF UNDERSTANDING WITH TWO UNIVERSITIES. THE LIVESTOCK BANKING MODULE ASSISTS WITH MODERN PASTURE MANAGEMENT TECHNIQUES, VETERINARY, AND ANIMAL HUSBANDRY. IN ADDITION, POULTRY IS BOTH ECO-FRIENDLY AND AN EXCELLENT SOURCE OF NUTRITION. IN 2019, THE FOUNDATION PROVIDED ONE EGG PER DAY FOR EACH SCHOOL CHILD THROUGH THE POULTRY LEARNING MODULE.
IN 2019, THE FOUNDATION EMBARKED ON BUILDING THE FIRST COMPUTER LEARNING CENTERS. OUR COMPUTER LEARNING MODULE IS THE MOST POPULAR AMOUNG STUDENTS. AT A COST OF ROUGHLY $225 PER COMPUTER, WE HAVE PROVIDED SEVERAL HUNDRED MINI-DESKTOPS OR LAPTOPS TO SCHOOLS. THESE ARE PREPROGRAMMED WITH ALL APPROVED TEXTBOOKS FOR PRIMARY AND SECONDARY EDUCATION AS WELL AS A LINUX CLONE MICROSOFT SUITE, TWO ENCYCLOPEDIAS, LEARNING GAMES, CODING INSTRUCTIONS AND MORE. THE FOUNDATION IS THE FIRST TO BUILD COMPUTER CENTERS IN GOVERNMENT SCHOOLS. ADDITIONALLY THROUGH THE SOLAR MODULE, SOLAR STUDY LAMPS ARE PROVIDED TO STUDENTS WHO HAVE NO ELECTRICITY AT HOME AND ALSO GIVEN AS AWARDS IN CONNECTION WITH OUR STUDENT ENRICHMENT CONTESTS.
