FOUNDED IN 2000, THE NASHVILLE CIVIC DESIGN CENTER IS A NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION WHOSE MISSION IS TO ELEVATE THE QUALITY OF NASHVILLE'S BUILT ENVIRONMENT AND TO PROMOTE PUBLIC PARTICIPATION IN THE CREATION OF A MORE BEAUTIFUL AND FUNCTIONAL CITY FOR ALL.
THROUGH THE NCDC DESIGN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD INITIATIVE (DYN), FORMERLY NAMED CITIZENSHIP IN ACTION, YOUTH ARE ENGAGED WITH THE WORLD AROUND THEM THROUGH A LENS OF THE CORE QUESTION: HOW DOES THE SHAPE THAT WE GIVE OUR CITY, IN TURN, SHAPE US? NCDC HAS BEEN AND IS CURRENTLY PREPARING DYN CURRICULUM FOR THE THE NASHVILLE METRO PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM STEAM PROGRAM FOR ALL 7TH AND 8TH GRADE CLASSES. THIS ONGOING ANNUAL CURRICULUM WILL REACH OVER 1,200 STUDENTS IN THE 2018-2019 ACADEMIC YEAR WITH THOUSANDS OVER FOLLOWING YEARS. ADDITIONALLY, THE INITIATIVE IMPACTS THEIR TEACHERS AND PARENTS AS WELL. THE ACTION ARM OF NCDC'S RECLAIMING PUBLIC SPACES (RPS) INITIATIVE, TURBO SEEKS TO ENHANCE NASHVILLE'S PUBLIC SPACES THROUGH THE USE OF TEMPORARY OR LOW-COST DESIGN INTERVENTIONS. EACH PROJECT IS INITIATED BY LOCAL STAKEHOLDERS OR COMMUNITY GROUPS, AND IS FULLY REVIEWED, PERMITTED AND APPROVED BY METRO PUBLIC WORKS. DURING THE PAST FISCAL YEAR, NCDC FACILITATED FOUR TURBO PROJECTS: A POP-UP PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT AND GAME ZONE IN MADISON, IN PARTNERSHIP WITH URBAN HOUSING SOLUTIONS; AN ARTISTIC PEDESTRIAN CROSSING, TRAFFIC CALMING, AND MURAL IN WEDGEWOOD HOUSTON; TRAFFIC CALMING AND PEDESTRIAN INFRASTRUCTURE IN ELYSIAN FIELDS IN FRONT OF THE SALAHADEEN CENTER; AND A TRAFFIC CALMING MURAL IN FRONT OF AMQUI ELEMENTARY IN MADISON. TURBO ALSO PROVIDED ONGOING MAINTENANCE TO A PREVIOUS INSTALLATION, THE PEDESTRIAN PLAZA AND MURAL IN FRONT OF THE EAST BRANCH LIBRARY IN EAST NASHVILLE, WHILE PROVIDING CONSULTATION AND DESIGN ASSISTANCE FOR DOZENS OF ASSOCIATIONS AND NEIGHBORHOOD GROUPS. IN TOTAL, NEARLY THREE DOZEN DIFFERENT ORGANIZATIONS AND OVER 300 PARTICIPANTS AND VOLUNTEERS INTERACTED WITH TURBO PROJECTS OR DESIGNS IN THE LAST FISCAL YEAR. NCDC'S SHAPING THE HEALTHY COMMUNITY (SHC) INITIATIVE, NOW IN ITS THIRD YEAR, INCLUDES RESEARCH AND DESIGN CONSULTATION ON THE IMPACT OF THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT ON PUBLIC HEALTH. AS NCDC CONTINUED GROWING ITS SHC INITIATIVE, WE PARTICIPATED IN A SERIES OF TRAININGS FOR AND WITH COMMUNITY LEADERS. IN THE FALL OF 2018 WE PARTNERED IN NEIGHBOR2NEIGHBOR'S GOOD NEIGHBOR DAY THROUGH AN ARTISTIC AND INTERACTIVE TRAINING THAT TAUGHT PARTICIPANTS ABOUT NEIGHBORHOOD DESIGN AND SCALE. THE TRAINING AND RESULTING 3D EXHIBIT WAS AVAILABLE TO THE MORE THAN 3000 PEOPLE WHO ATTENDED GOOD NEIGHBOR DAY. NCDC ALSO PARTICIPATED IN A FORUM ON PLACE AND HEALTH ALONGSIDE METRO PUBLIC HEALTH AND FELLOW LOCAL EXPERTS. THE PUBLIC CONVERSATION WITH OVER 100 ATTENDEES DISCUSSED HOW THE PLACES WE WORK, LIVE, AND PLAY AFFECT OUR HEALTH, AND STRATEGIES FOR IMPROVING NASHVILLE'S HEALTH OUTCOMES. NCDC ALSO PROVIDED TWO DIFFERENT TRAININGS FOR NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATIONS ON THE IMPACTS OF HEALTH AND THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT.
