OAK RIDGE ASSOCIATED UNIVERSITIES, INC. (ORAU) IS A PRIVATE, NOT-FOR-PROFIT CORPORATION AND CONSORTIUM OF 125 COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES AND IS PRINCIPALLY A MANAGEMENT AND OPERATING CONTRACTOR FOR THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY (DOE). THROUGH THIS CONTRACT, ORAU MANAGES AND OPERATES THE OAK RIDGE INSTITUTE FOR SCIENCE AND EDUCATION (ORISE), WHICH CARRIES OUT RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS IN SCIENCE/ENGINEERING EDUCATION, TRAINING MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS AND ENERGY/ENVIRONMENTAL SYSTEMS FOR DOE AND OTHER FEDERAL AGENCIES AND GOVERNMENTAL ORGANIZATIONS. IN ADDITION TO THE OPERATION OF ORISE, ORAU CORPORATE CONDUCTS PROGRAMS TO PROVIDE SERVICES TO ITS MEMBER INSTITUTIONS AND OTHER GOVERNMENTAL AND PRIVATE ORGANIZATIONS.

HEALTH, ENERGY, AND ENVIRONMENT: ORAU POSSESSES EXPERIENCE IN EPIDEMIOLOGY AND WORKER PUBLIC HEALTH STUDIES. EXPERTISE LIES IN THE AREAS OF STUDYING EXPOSURE HISTORIES OF WORKER OR PUBLIC POPULATIONS TO DETERMINE POSSIBLE CORRELATION BETWEEN EXPOSURES TO RADIATION OR OTHER HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCES AND ILLNESSES. CAPABILITIES ALSO INCLUDE SCREENINGS OF WORKERS OR THE PUBLIC TO IDENTIFY POTENTIAL HEALTH CONCERNS RESULTING FROM OCCUPATIONAL OR OTHER EXPOSURES, AND COLLECTING AND ANALYZING DATA RELATED TO WORKER HEALTH HISTORIES. ORAU HAS ALSO PARTNERED WITH GOVERNMENTAL AGENCIES, INDUSTRY, AND STATE HEALTH DEPARTMENTS TO PERFORM QUALITY CONTROL SERVICES, DATA ABSTRACTING, AND PROVIDE ELECTRONIC MEDICAL RECORDKEEPING CAPABILITIES.WHEN THE DIAGNOSIS OF ILLNESS OR DISEASE IS LINKED TO WORKERS' OCCUPATIONAL RADIATION OR OTHERHAZARDOUS SUBSTANCE EXPOSURES, WORKERS NEED A RESPONSIVE AND MEDICALLY COMPETENT SYSTEM TO ADDRESS THEIR HEALTH NEEDS. ORAU HAS ESTABLISHED EFFECTIVE PARTNERSHIPS ON A NATIONAL SCALE TO PROVIDE INNOVATIVE WORKER HEALTH SOLUTIONS, AND ORAU POSSESS THE EXPERIENCE AND EXPERTISE NECESSARY TO PROVIDE THE HIGHEST LEVELS OF QUALITY AND INTEGRITY. ORAU FOCUSES ON WORKPLACE HAZARDS RESEARCH AND THE OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY OF WORKERS.AS THE NATION'S RESEARCH FACILITIES AND LABORATORIES PLACE GREATER IMPORTANCE ON ENSURING THAT ACTIVITIES ARE PERFORMED IN A SAFE AND ENVIRONMENTALLY RESPONSIBLE MANNER, ACCURATE MEASUREMENT AND ANALYSIS OF OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH ISSUES IS CRITICAL TO MITIGATING THE CAUSES AND EFFECTS OF ON-THE-JOB EXPOSURES. FROM BROAD-SCOPE EPIDEMIOLOGY AND HEALTH SCREENINGS/SURVEILLANCE STUDIES TO BERYLLIUM SENSITIVITY TESTING AND RADIATION DOSE RECONSTRUCTION, TO PROVIDING PUBLIC HEALTH COMMUNICATION AND TECHNICAL TRAINING, ORAU OFFERS A COMPREHENSIVE APPROACH TO HELPING CUSTOMERS MANAGE THEIR WORKER HEALTH CONCERNS.ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT AND VERIFICATION PROGRAMS ENCOMPASS THE CHARACTERIZATION OF SPECIFIC ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS TO BE DISPOSED OF AND THEN THE INDEPENDENT VERIFICATION OF REMEDIATION EFFORTS TO ENSURE THE DISPOSAL MEETS FEDERAL REGULATORY STANDARDS. ORAU ALSO PROVIDES HEALTH PHYSICS EXPERTISE AND SPECIAL TRAINING PROGRAMS TO TEACH GOVERNMENT EMPLOYEES, OTHER GOVERNMENT CONTRACTORS, AND THE PRIVATE SECTOR THE APPROPRIATE AND PROPER METHODS TO HANDLE RADIOACTIVE MATERIALS, ACCIDENTS INVOLVING DANGEROUS OR HAZARDOUS MATERIALS, AND IN SOME CASES THE APPROPRIATE AND PROPER ACTIONS IN THE EVENT OF A SPILL.

SCIENTIFIC ASSESSMENT & WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT: SCIENCE AND EDUCATION PROGRAMS ARE THOSE THAT PRIMARILY SUPPORT FELLOWSHIPS, INTERNSHIPS, SCHOLARSHIPS OR OTHER MEANS TO PLACE STUDENTS, FACULTY, AND POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHERS INTO RESEARCH POSITIONS AT NATIONAL LABORATORIES AND OTHER RESEARCH FACILITIES OR INSTITUTIONS THROUGHOUT THE WORLD. THE PURPOSE OF THESE PROGRAMS IS TO HAVE INDIVIDUALS CONDUCT OR PARTICIPATE IN RESEARCH WITH THEIR OWN EDUCATION BEING ONE OF THE BENEFICIARIES. IN ADDITION, ORAU'S CENTER FOR SCIENCE EDUCATION INCORPORATES AN INTERACTIVE, TECHNOLOGY-RICH CLASSROOM THAT BRIDGES THE GAP BETWEEN "IN-THE-FIELD" RESEARCH AND THE CONTENT CURRENTLY BEING USED IN TODAY'S CLASSROOMS. THE NATION NEEDS A STEADY SUPPLY OF SCIENTISTS AND ENGINEERS TO MEET FUTURE NEEDS IN CRITICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY AREAS. STUDENTS IN SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, MATHEMATICS, AND ENGINEERING ("STEM") FIELDS NEED THE SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND EXPERIENCE TO STAY COMPETITIVE IN AN EVER CHANGING GLOBAL MARKETPLACE. TO ADDRESS THESE NATIONAL WORKFORCE AND SCIENCE EDUCATION NEEDS, ORAU PROVIDES A SINGLE RESOURCE FOR DEVELOPING AND ADMINISTERING HIGH-QUALITY, EXPERIENCE BASED PROGRAMS TO FILL THE PIPELINE WITH THE NEXT GENERATION OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY LEADERS.THESE SCIENCE EDUCATION PROGRAMS HELP TO PREPARE FOR PENDING RETIREMENT OF A LARGE SEGMENT OF THE STEM WORKFORCE. LAST YEAR ALONE, ORAU DEMONSTRATED A BROAD IMPACT TO SUPPORT SCIENTIFIC INITIATIVES TO HELP WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT BY SUPPORTING MORE THAN 10,000 PARTICIPANTS IN RESEARCH PARTICIPATION PROGRAMS, SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY POLICY PROGRAMS, OR COMPLEMENTARY EVENTS (E.G., SCIENCE COMPETITIONS AND TEACHER PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOPS). ORAU OFFERS INTERNSHIP, SCHOLARSHIP, AND FELLOWSHIP PROGRAMS THAT HELP TO ENCOURAGE PARTICIPANTS TO PURSUE DEGREES AND CAREERS IN AREAS OF CRITICAL NATIONAL NEED.SCIENTIFIC AND TECHNICAL RESOURCE INTEGRATION PROGRAMS USE PANELS OF INDEPENDENT REVIEWERS TO EVALUATE RESEARCH PROPOSALS, ONGOING PROBLEMS, OR SCIENTIFIC INFORMATION PRODUCED FROM RESEARCH ENDEAVORS TO ENSURE THAT THE INFORMATION IS SCIENTIFICALLY AND TECHNICALLY SOUND AND MERITS THE FEDERAL OR OTHER FUNDING THAT IS PROVIDED FOR RESEARCH PROPOSED OR CURRENTLY BEING CONDUCTED.ORAU OFFERS EXPERTISE IN THE AREAS OF NATIONAL SECURITY READINESS AND EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS. TO FURTHER SUPPORT THESE EFFORTS, ORAU ALSO EMPLOYS FORENSIC SPECIALISTS AND OTHER SUBJECT MATTER EXPERTS TO PROVIDE FORENSIC EVIDENCE AND OTHER INVESTIGATIVE TESTING.
