Institute for Appropriate Technology: Develop, demonstrate and disseminate new technologies and methodologies for energy, agriculture, communications, transportation, art and culture with a view towards encouraging regenerative ecology on a finite planet.
Global Village Institute develops, demonstrates, and disseminates community-based strategies to remove carbon from atmosphere and ocean and promote biodiversity.
In partnership with Global Ecovillage Network, Permaculture Institute of North America, and Gaia University, the Institute educates international students and transfers technologies through an immersion pedagogy of ecovillage living, classroom activity and hands-on skill-building exercises, together with workshops, lectures, practical demonstrations, publications, and outreach on six continents. In 2019 GVI provided more than 50 public lectures and 20 extended workshops (including Belize, Canada, Mexico, Ireland, UK, Spain, Estonia, Italy and the US), and produced numerous publications and course materials. In 2020 the global pandemic curtailed our public lectures but online workshops replaced many of our in-person classes and publications continued.
Carbon Cool Lab: Working with the Commonwealth of Nations, Common Earth, R20, Project NOAH, Ecosystem Restoration Camps and others, GVI is building robust social structures, economies and ecologies centered upon carbon drawdown by natural means. In 2019-2020 this program included participation (with consultative status) at the UNFCCC meeting in Madrid (COP25) and development of a prototype cooperative enterprise hub for an indigenous and refugee rural Maya community in the Toledo District of Belize.
Sail Transport Network: In the era after petroleum long haul travel will once more rely on renewable energy. GVI sponsors the Sail Transport Network, Sail Med, and Aegean Sail Cargo. This program was temporarily suspended in 2020 because of the global pandemic and closed borders.
