Organizations Filed Purposes: TO PROVIDE REHABILITATIVE AND DEVELOPMENTAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR MEN, WOMEN AND CHILDREN MOVING OUT OF CRISIS, ADDICTION OR SIMILAR RECOVERY SITUATIONS, OR SITUATIONS OF POVERTY OR ABUSE, IN THE FORM OF VOCATIONAL, EDUCATIONAL, RESIDENTIAL, AND COMMUNITY-BUILDING INITIATIVES, IN ORDER TO BETTER EQUIP (BOTH PRACTICALLY AND RELATIONALLY) SUCH INDIVIDUALS TO ENGAGE LIFE AND SOCIETY WITH DIGNITY, HEALTH AND STRENGTH.

IMPLEMENTATION OF CAREER/FINANCIAL EDUCATION CLASSES: ONE OF CLERESTORY'S KEY ACCOMPLISHMENTS HAS BEEN THE IMPLEMENTATION OF A LONG-TERM STRATEGY OF BUILDING STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS TO ADDRESS THE LACK OF SUSTAINABLE ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITY FOR THE MATERIALLY POOR IN BIRMINGHAM. THIS OCCURS INITIALLY THROUGH THE USE OF WORK-READINESS CLASSES AND FINANCIAL LITERACY CLASSES, WHICH ARE THE RELATIONAL "ENTRY POINTS" FOR BOTH PARTICIPANTS AND VOLUNTEERS. THESE CLASSES PROVIDE AN EASY "ON-RAMP" TO RELATIONAL ENGAGEMENT. THROUGH RESEARCH AND EXPERIENCE CLERESTORY HAS LEARNED THAT IT IS DIFFICULT TO HELP THE POOR FIND AND WALK THE "PATH OUT OF POVERTY", OR TO ENCOURAGE THE WEALTHY AND POWERFUL TO ENGAGE THE PROBLEM, UNLESS PERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS ARE BUILT. THESE CLASSES RESULT IN THE BUILDING OF SUCH RELATIONSHIPS, LEADING TO GREATLY INCREASED NETWORKING, JOB AND OTHER ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITY FOR THOSE FIGHTING TO BE RELEASED FROM POVERTY'S GRIP.

PROVISION OF CENTRALIZED SERVICES/INITIATIVES: IN CONNECTION WITH OFFERING THE ABOVE- DESCRIBED CLASSES, CLERESTORY HAS SOUGHT TO CENTRALIZE CERTAIN SERVICES/INITIATIVES RELATED TO THE CLASSES SO THAT THEIR ADOPTION AND IMPLEMENTATION BY RELIEF ORGANIZATIONS WOULD BE LESS DAUNTING. CENTRALIZED OFFERINGS SUCH AS MENTOR/INSTRUCTOR TRAINING, BACKGROUND CHECKS, DRUG TESTING, LEGAL/ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANCE, TRANSPORTATION SOLUTIONS, PAID INTERNSHIPS FOR GRADUATES, AND MATCHING SAVINGS ACCOUNTS, AMONG OTHERS, HAVE ALLOWED ORGANIZATIONAL PARTICIPATION IN THE ABOVE-DESCRIBED CLASSES TO GROW FROM SUBSTANTIALLY OVER THE PAST FEW YEARS.

BUSINESS INCUBATION AND ACQUISITION: CLERESTORY HAS ALSO HAD SUCCESS STARTING AND ACQUIRING BUSINESSES FOR THE PURPOSE OF PROVIDING WORK AND MANAGEMENT OPPORTUNITIES FOR ITS CLASS GRADUATES. CLERESTORY ASSISTS THESE START-UPS AND ACQUISITIONS BY (I) HELPING WITH THE LEGAL, ACCOUNTING AND OTHER OVERHEAD THAT OFTEN HINDERS START-UPS; (II) CENTRALIZING CERTAIN ADMINISTRATION FUNCTIONS AMONG MULTIPLE START-UPS TO ALLOW FOR COST-SHARING; AND (III) HELPING TO RAISE AND PROVIDE START-UP FUNDING. THESE BUSINESSES HELP TO INSURE THAT CLERESTORY CLASS GRADUATES HAVE IMMEDIATE ACCESS TO ON-JOB-TRAINING AND CRITICAL INCOME, AS WELL AS THE OPPORTUNITY FOR ADVANCEMENT THAT IS JUST, MERIT- BASED AND UNHINDERED BY ANY PAST ISSUES THAT MAY EXIST.
