HANDS ON BIRMINGHAM WAS ESTABLISHED IN 1998 WITH THE GOAL OF MAKING VOLUNTEERING ACCESSIBLE TO EVERYONE. IN 2019, IT STARTED DOING BUSINESS AS UNITED WAY HANDS ON (UWHO). UWHO'S MISSION IS TO CONNECT PEOPLE TO MEANINGFUL VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES TO HELP BRING ABOUT POSITIVE SOCIAL CHANGE IN THE COMMUNITY. HANDS ON BIRMINGHAM DBA UNITED WAY HANDS ON (UWHO) CONNECTS VOLUNTEERS WITH ORGANIZED VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES THROUGH PARTNERSHIPS WITH NONPROFITS, SCHOOLS, NEIGHBORHOODS AND PARKS & REC WHILE ALSO ENGAGING SOCIALLY RESPONSIBLE COMPANIES TO HELP MAKE POSITIVE SOCIAL CHANGE IN THE COMMUNITY.
UNITED WAY HANDS ON OR UWHO PROVIDES ESSENTIAL VOLUNTEER LABOR TO SEVERAL NON-PROFITS AND COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS THROUGHOUT GREATER BIRMINGHAM; INCLUDING BLOUNT, SHELBY, ST. CLAIR AND WALKER COUNTIES. IN 2019, UWHO PROVIDED MORE THAN 8,513 HOURS OF LABOR TO SUPPORT NONPROFIT AND COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS THROUGHOUT CENTRAL ALABAMA. THESE HOURS WERE ACCRUED THROUGH SIX MAJOR DAYS OF SERVICE AND SPECIAL PROJECTS: BCS BACK TO SCHOOL BEAUTIFICATION, PROJECT HOMELESS CONNECT, DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. (MLK) DAY OF SERVICE, FAMILY VOLUNTEER DAY, 9/11 WEEK OF SERVICE AND REMEMBRANCE, UNITED WAY DAY OF ACTION, BUNNY AID, BACK -TO- SCHOOL BACKPACK DRIVE AND COMMUNITY SERVICE REFERRALS. PROJECTS CONSISTED OF NEIGHBORHOOD REVITALIZATIONS, PARK REFURBISHMENTS, PAINTING, LANDSCAPING, CONSTRUCTING COMMUNITY GARDENS AND GREENSCAPES, CLEANING CREEKS AND RIVERS, NURTURING CHILDREN, AND SOCIALIZING WITH SENIORS. UWHO RECRUITED AND MANAGED 2,685 VOLUNTEERS IN 2019.
PROJECT HOMELESS CONNECT (PHC) IS AN ANNUAL EVENT STARTED IN 2008, TO ADDRESS: SOCIAL, FINANCIAL, HUNGER AND HEALTH ISSUES IMPACTING THE HOMELESS COMMUNITY OF BIRMINGHAM. PROJECT HOMELESS CONNECT PROVIDES CRUCIAL SERVICES FOR ONE DAY UNDER ONE ROOF ANNUALLY IN MARCH. IN PARTNERSHIP WITH ONE ROOF, THE CITY OF BIRMINGHAM, UNITED WAY HANDS ON OR (UWHO) AND OVER 40 COMMUNITY PARTNER AGENCIES AND LOCAL BUSINESSES; ANYONE STRUGGLING WITH HOMELESSNESS CAN ATTEND PHC AND RECEIVE ANY AND ALL SERVICES AVAILABLE, FREE OF CHARGE, IN ONE DAY. THESE SERVICES INCLUDE ANYTHING FROM RESOURCES FOR HOUSING AND EMPLOYMENT, A HOT MEAL; RESOURCES TO ADDRESS HUNGER AND NUTRITION, LEGAL SERVICES, FINANCIAL PLANNING, HAIRCUTS, COUNSELING, CARE KITS, CLOTHING AND A PLETHORA OF HEALTHCARE SERVICES INCLUDING MEDICAL, DENTAL AND HIV TESTING. UNITED WAY HANDS ON OR UWHO'S ROLE IN THIS EVENT IS TO COORDINATE AND TRAIN VOLUNTEERS THAT SERVE AS SMILING FACES CLIENT GUIDES. THESE VOLUNTEERS ARE PAIRED ONE-ON-ONE WITH EACH HOMELESS CLIENT, TO SERVE AS THEIR HOST AND GUIDE THROUGHOUT THEIR TIME AT PHC. IN 2019, OVER 600 CLIENTS WERE SERVED AT PHC WITH 582 VOLUNTEERS DIRECTLY PAIRED WITH A HOMELESS CLIENT. WITHOUT THESE VOLUNTEERS, THE EVENT WOULD NOT BE A SUCCESS YEAR AFTER YEAR. PHC VOLUNTEERS ARE INSTRUMENTAL TO HELP INCREASE THE CAPACITY OF ALL THE ORGANIZATIONS PROVIDING SERVICES TO THE CLIENTS. UNITED WAY HANDS ON OR UWHO'S GOAL IS TO GUIDE THE CLIENTS THROUGH THE PROCESS AND HELP THEM NAVIGATE A VAST ARRAY OF HELPFUL SERVICES; TREAT THEM WITH THE DIGNITY AND RESPECT THAT THEY DESERVE AND TO MAKE THEIR DAY AS SEAMLESS AS POSSIBLE BY SIMPLY BEING A FRIEND. THOUGH SERVICES ARE PROVIDED IN ONE DAY, THESE SERVICES HELP THE HOMELESS POPULATION ACROSS THE CONTINUUM OF THEIR SITUATION. UNITED WAY HANDS ON OR UWHO VOLUNTEERS DEVOTED 2,619 VOLUNTEER HOURS TO PHC.
UNITED WAY HANDS ON CONDUCTS ONE OF THE LARGEST MLK DAYS OF SERVICE IN THE COUNTRY AMONG HANDS ON AFFILIATES. IN 2019, 850 VOLUNTEERS PARTICIPATED IN 25 SERVICE PROJECTS THROUGHOUT CENTRAL ALABAMA. VOLUNTEERS FROM ALL WALKS OF LIFE, AGES, GENDERS, AND RACES WORKED TOGETHER TO MAKE A POSITIVE IMPACT IN THEIR COMMUNITIES. OTHER NOTABLE ACCOMPLISHMENTS FOR UWHO INCLUDE: THE ASSEMBLY OF 1,533 EASTER BASKETS FOR HOMELESS CHILDREN THROUGH THE BUNNY AID PROGRAM; THE DISTRIBUTION OF 1,316 BACKPACKS, DONATED BY VOLUNTEERS, TO CHILDREN IN NEED. LASTLY, UWHO PARTNERS WITH THE BIRMINGHAM CITY SCHOOLS TO HELP GET THE GROUNDS READY FOR THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL EACH YEAR.
