GOOD SCHOOL FOOD: GOOD SCHOOL FOOD IS JVTF'S PRIMARY PROGRAM. GSF IS A PRE-K-12 FOOD EDUCATION MODEL THAT CONNECTS STUDENTS TO FOOD THROUGH CROSS-CURRICULAR, STANDARDS-BASED CONTENT DURING THE SCHOOL DAY. GSF IS UNIQUE IN ITS APPROACH TO FOOD EDUCATION IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS IN THAT WE PROVIDE SCHOOLS WITH STATE-OF-THE-ART TEACHING FARMS AND FULL-TIME STAFF, KNOWN AS GSF INSTRUCTORS, WHO WORK WITH SCHOOL FACULTY TO DEVELOP DYNAMIC PROGRAMS AND CURRICULA. FARMERS MARKET:EACH FALL AND SPRING, TEAMS OF STUDENTS SELL PRODUCE TO THEIR TEACHERS, PARENTS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS THROUGH THE STUDENT RUN FARMERS MARKETS. MARKETS ARE A TRUE PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN THE SCHOOLS AND JVTF'S DOWNTOWN URBAN FARM, WHICH SUPPLIES MUCH OF THE PRODUCE FOR SALE EACH WEEK.FARM LAB CLUB:THROUGH FARM LAB CLUB, STUDENTS BECOME STEWARDS OF THEIR SCHOOL'S FARM LAB SPACE. THEY SPEND TIME EACH WEEK HELPING TO MAINTAIN THE GARDEN, PREPARE SNACKS WITH THE PRODUCE THEY HAVE HELPED TO GROW, AND WORK ON PROJECTS WITH THEIR INSTRUCTORS RELATED TO FOOD AND FARMING.COOKING CLUB:A SMALL TEAM OF STUDENTS GATHER TOGETHER EACH WEEK TO TRY NEW RECIPES, BUILD COOKING SKILLS, AND SHARE A MEAL THEY HAVE PREPARED WITH FRIENDS. THROUGH A PARTNERSHIP WITH SHIPT, A BIRMINGHAM-BASED DELIVERY BUSINESS, COOKING CLUB MEMBER STUDENTS TAKE HOME EVERYTHING THEY NEED TO COOK A MEAL AT HOME AND SHARE THEIR NEW SKILLS WITH THEIR FAMILIES.COLLABORATIVE INSTRUCTION: INSTRUCTORS PARTNER WITH TEACHERS TO DEVELOP STANDARDS BASED LESSONS AND UNITS THAT TIE IN WITH WHAT STUDENTS ARE LEARNING IN THE CLASSROOM. FEATURING TWO ACRES OF IN-GROUND PRODUCTION SPACE, WHS URBAN FARM INCLUDES A STATE-OF-THE-ART GREENHOUSE, AND PRODUCE PROCESSING AND STORAGE FACILITIES.
