Organizations Filed Purposes: Enhance lives of mature adults through social services and civic engagement: through Retired Senior Volunteer, Foster Grandparent, and Senior Companion programs, as well as Geriatric Social Services and Nutrition programs.

Senior Companion Program (SCP):Aging seniors who are frail or ill are often unable to manage their day-to-day tasks such as meal preparation, laundry, transportation, and remembering to take their medication. Frail seniors are also at risk of social isolation as more families are working full time and are unable to stay with an aging parent during the day. In home services are often cost-prohibitive even after insurance. In addition, medicaid waiver services can have a waiting list of up to 3 months. The SCP utilizes low-income seniors in the community who are able to pass a physical, as well as an extensive background check, and have a desire to volunteer their time working with other seniors. Senior companions dedicate a minimum of 15 hours a week assisting other seniors in their home with daily living skills such as those listed above and providing daily companionship for a homebound senior. Senior companions earn a small living stipend of $3.00 per hour. Due to the Covid pandemic, most volunteers did not volunteer from March through September.

Foster Grandparent Program (FGP):Alabama ranks 47th in the nation for education and has one of the higher high school drop-out rates. In addition to the academic needs of younter children to be successful, the increased geographic mobility, lack of organized activities in poor neighboorhoods, and the rise of single-parent families and families with two working parents have reduced the number adult role models in the day-to-day lives of children. This increases the risk factors for dropout rates. Foster grandparents meet this need by utilizing low income senior volunteers who are able to pass a physical and extensive background checks, and have a desire to impact the life of a child. Each foster grandparent dedicates a minimum of 16 hours a week to mentor, tutor, and assist children with special needs. In return, foster grandparents earn a small stipend of $3.00 per hour. Due to the Covid pandemic, most volunteers did not volunteer March through September.

Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP):All communities depend on volunteers, both formal and informal, to address a range of problems and needs that other social institutions cannot handle themselves. Research has shown there are many benefits for those who volunteer and it is more beneficial to older adults than to younger people. The benefits go beyond just making the volunteers feel better about themselves; it helps them remain bealthy and could even prolong their lives. The Organizations program, RSVP, ensures that volunteers are matched with opportunities that suit their interests and skills. RSVP stands apart from other volunteer programs by understanding older volunteers and how they approach volunteerism. Volunteers are also provided ongoing support throughout a wide range of meaningful volunteer experiences. In 2020 RSVP had over 1,800 volunteers who volunteered over 150,000 hours to nonprofits, schools, governmental programs, and community efforts. Due to the Covid pandemic, most volunteers did not volunteer from March through September.
