Organizations Filed Purposes: UNITED WAY OF CENTRAL ALABAMA'S MISSION IS TO INCREASE THE ORGANIZED CAPACITY OF PEOPLE TO CARE FOR ONE ANOTHER AND TO IMPROVE THEIR COMMUNITY. WE ARE ACTIVELY ENGAGED IN BLOUNT, JEFFERSON, SHELBY, ST. CLAIR AND WALKER COUNTY TO CREATE COMMUNITY-BASED SOLUTIONS THAT STRENGTHEN QUALITY OF LIFE. WE FIGHT FOR THE HEALTH, EDUCATION AND FINANCIAL STABILITY OF EVERY PERSON IN OUR COMMUNITY. PEOPLE LIKE YOU HELP US IMPACT THE LIVES OF THOSE IN NEED EVERY DAY. BECAUSE CHANGE DOESN'T HAPPEN ALONE. TO LIVE BETTER WE MUST LIVE UNITED.

HEALTH - UWCA AND ITS PARTNERS TARGET EMERGING HEALTH ISSUES IMPACTING OUR COMMUNITY SUCH AS CHILDHOOD OBESITY, CHRONIC DISEASES, THE UNINSURED, CHILDHOOD IMMUNIZATIONS, SUBSTANCE ABUSE, FAMILY VIOLENCE, AND ORAL HEALTH. UNITED WAY HEALTHY COMMUNITIES INITIATIVE FOCUSES ON ACTIVITIES TO PROMOTE SAFE, HEALTHY PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AND REDUCED TRAFFIC EMISSIONS. IN 2019, MORE THAN 2,800 STUDENTS PARTICIPATED IN BICYCLE/PEDESTRIAN EVENTS SUCH AS WALKING SCHOOL BUS EVENTS AND BICYCLE RODEOS. NEARLY 200 VOLUNTEERS SERVED TO SAFELY FACILITATE THE PROGRAMS.

INCOME - UWCA IS WORKING TO REDUCE THE NUMBER OF LOW-INCOME FAMILIES WHO ARE FINANCIALLY UNSTABLE. UWCA SUPPORTS PARTNER AGENCIES AND PROVIDES DIRECT SERVICES TO FAMILIES AND INDIVIDUALS THROUGH OUR FINANCIAL STABILITY SERVICES INITIATIVE AND THE UNITED WAY HOUSING ALLIANCE. UWCA OFFERS A CONTINUUM OF PROGRAMS TACKLING THE UNDERLYING CAUSES OF HARDSHIP FACED BY LOW INCOME FAMILIES. IN 2019, THE PROGRAMS SERVED 14,993 INDIVIDUALS AND FAMILIES INCLUDING: 41 LOW INCOME INDIVIDUALS IN THE INDIVIDUAL DEVELOPMENT ACCOUNT PROGRAM WHO ACQUIRED ASSETS VALUED AT $3.5 MILLION THROUGH MATCHED SAVINGS; 3,577 INDIVIDUALS SERVED THROUGH THE FREE TAX ASSISTANCE PROGRAM BRINGING $2.2 MILLION IN TAX REFUNDS TO LOW INCOME ALABAMIANS; 439 INDIVIDUALS AVOIDING HOMELESSNESS WITH A FOCUS ON FAMILIES WITH SCHOOL AGE CHILDREN; 564 INDIVIDUALS WHO PARTICIPATED IN FINANCIAL EMPOWERMENT EDUCATION; AND 10,372 INDIVIDUALS SERVED THROUGH THE UNITED WAY HOUSING ALLIANCE (UWHA), DESIGNATED BY THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF HOUSING AND URBAN DEVELOPMENT (HUD) AS A REGIONAL INTERMEDIARY, OVERSEEING AND SUPPORTING HUD-APPROVED HOUSING COUNSELING AGENCIES TO IMPROVE HOUSING ACCESS AND STABILITY.

EDUCATION - FROM QUALITY CHILDCARE TO DROPOUT PREVENTION PROGRAMS, UWCA USES ITS COLLECTIVE RESOURCES TO PROMOTE PROGRAMS ALONG THE ENTIRE EDUCATION CONTINUUM. IN ADDITION TO SUPPORTING TUTORING, AFTER SCHOOL AND MENTORING PROGRAMS, UWCA'S SUCCESS BY SIX INITIATIVE IMPROVES SCHOOL READINESS BY ENGAGING PRE-K EDUCATORS AND PROVIDING HIGH QUALITY EARLY LEARNING CURRICULUM, STATE-OF-THE ART CLASSROOM MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT AND EVALUATION. IN 2019, THE PROGRAM SERVED 665 STUDENTS, OF WHICH 93% RECEIVED AN AVERAGE SCORE IN THE KINDERGARTEN READINESS ASSESSMENT. IN ADDITION, OUR HELP ME GROW CENTRAL ALABAMA PROGRAM SERVED 302 FAMILIES (WITH 359 CHILDREN) AND PROVIDED 753 REFERRALS TO CONNECT FAMILIES WITH COMMUNITY-BASED DEVELOPMENTAL AND BEHAVIORAL RESOURCES SO CHILDREN CAN START SCHOOL HEALTHY AND READY TO SUCCEED.
