TO EMPOWER YOUTH LEADERSHIP THROUGH COMMUNITY SERVICE.
URBAN SERVICE CAMPS: THREE CAMPS, HOSTED IN DOWNTOWN BIRMINGHAM, IN WHICH MALE AND FEMALE YOUTH AGES 13-18 (OF ALL RACES, RELIGIONS AND SOCIOECONOMIC BACKGROUNDS), FOCUS ON LEARNING ABOUT THEIR CITY, THEIR COMMUNITIES, THE ISSUES FACING OUR RESIDENTS, AND HOW TO BE PART OF THE SOLUTION TO COMMUNITY PROBLEMS. YOUTH ALSO LEARN HOW TO ACTIVELY BE AGENTS OF CHANGE AND HOW TO BUILD COMMUNITY AMONG YOUNG PEOPLE FROM ALL WALKS OF LIFE. 62 TOTAL CAMPERS PARTICIPATED IN 2019 FROM 20 DIFFERENT ZIP CODES AND 22 DIFFERENT SCHOOLS AND PROVIDED NEARLY 2800 HOURS OF VOLUNTEER SERVICE.
SERVICE EDUCATION: YOUTHSERVE IN-SCHOOL PROGRAMMING FEATURES CURRICULUM ON CIVIC ENGAGEMENT DESIGNED FOR GRADES 7-12 (A FEW EXCEPTIONS INCLUDE 5TH GRADE). IN 2019, YOUTHSERVE COLLABORATED WITH THE UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA AT BIRMINGHAM TO ALIGN ALL SERVICE EDUCATION CURRICULUM TO ALABAMA CORE CURRICULUM FOR EDUCATORS. THIS IN-KIND SUPPORT MADE IT POSSIBLE TO BEGIN CONNECTING WITH MORE SCHOOLS TO OFFER THE OPPORTUNITY, WHICH CORRELATES TO STATE CORE EDUCATION STANDARDS IN SOCIAL STUDIES, CIVICS, LEADERSHIP AND LANGUAGE ARTS. PROGRAMS ARE VARIOUS LENGTHS DEPENDING ON FORMAT AND THE MOST INTENSE VERSIONS, KNOWN AS THE CHANGEMAKERS, CAN GO ALL YEAR AND END WITH A SERVICE PROJECT. THE SESSIONS ARE IMPLEMENTED BY YOUTHSERVE STAFF AND AMERICORPS MEMBERS, AS WELL AS COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERS. PROGRAMS ARE REQUESTED BY TEACHERS, GUIDANCE COUNSELORS AND ADMINISTRATORS AT EACH SCHOOL. APPROXIMATE NUMBER OF STUDENTS SERVED IN THIS PROGRAM IN 2019 WAS 1236 IN 13 DIFFERENT SCHOOLS.
YOUTH PHILANTHROPY: DIRECTING A GROUP OF HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS TO UNDERSTAND AND EXPLORE THE GRANT-MAKING PROCESS AND THE IMPORTANCE OF CONTRIBUTION TO NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS. THE PROGRAM LASTS ONE YEAR AND INTRODUCES STUDENTS TO GRANT WRITING, SOCIAL ISSUES AND PUBLIC SPEAKING, AND AWARDS GRANTS TO WORTHY GROUPS FROM FUNDING SUPPLIED BY THE JOSEPH S. BRUNO CHARITABLE FOUNDATION AT THE END OF THE YEAR. 27 STUDENTS FROM 14 SCHOOLS PARTICIPATED IN THIS PROGRAM IN FALL 2019.
