EMERGENCY/DISASTER RELIEF: IN 2019, THE LAMBI FUND OF HAITI CONTINUED ITS PROGRAM OF REPAIRING AND RESTORING DAMAGES DUE TO HURRICANE MATTHEW AND OTHER NATUAL DISASTERS CAUSED BY CLIMATE CHANGE. ITS CORE REHABILITATION PROGRAM INVOLVED 3 ORGANIZATIONS WITH PROJECTS THAT INCLUDED REPAIRING 25 CISTERNS, OX- PLOWING, ANIMAL PARKS, PASTURE LAND AND BREEDING, CREDIT FUNDS, PRODUCTION OF SEEDLINGS AND TRAINING. 202 FAMILIES BENEFITED FROM THIS ORGANIZATION'S CORE REHABILITATION PROJECTS. ENVIRONMENT: PLANTING TREES HELPS RECOVER THE DEPLETED HAITIAN TERRAIN FOR CURRENT AND FUTURE GENERATIONS. HAITI IS STILL CONSIDERED THE MOST DEFORESTED COUNTRY IN THE WESTERN HEMISPHERE. PLANTING TREES NOT ONLY IMPROVES THE LAND AND SOIL TO ASSIST FARMERS WITH PLANTING, BUT IT ALSO PREVENTS NATURAL DISASTER LIKE LAND/MUD-SLIDES FROM OCCURRING. THROUGHOUT 2019, LAMBI FUND OF HAITI CONTINUED TO PROVIDE ITS ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT FRAMEWORK TO COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS. THE AIM IS TO RAISE AWARENESS OF THE ISSUES OF ENVIRONMENTAL DEGRADATION AND ALSO TO TAKE CONCRETE ACTION TO PROTECT THE ENVIRONMENT. ACTIONS HAVE MAINLY FOCUSED ON: 1) TREE SEEDLING PRODUCTION TO ASSIST IN REFORESTATION AND 2) TRAINING PROGRAMS WHICH ARE FOCUSED ON THE ENVIRONMENT: TREE NURSERY TECHNIQUES, CLIMATE CHANGE, AGRO-FORESTRY). FOURTEEN ORGANIZATIONS RECEIVED SUPPORT FROM LAMBI FUND IN 2019, INCLUDING TEN THAT ALREADY STARTED PROJECTS AND FOUR THAT LAUNCHED NEW PROJECTS. THE COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS ARE FROM TWO DEPARTMENTS OF THE COUNTRY. MORE THAN 1,500 PEASANT MEMBERS OF THESE ORGANIZATIONS PARTICIPATED IN ALL THE ACTIVITIES CARRIED OUT UNDER THESE PROJECTS. IN 2019, A TOTAL OF 491,503 SEEDLINGS WERE PRODUCED, WITH 120,000 SEEDLINGS GROWING IN TREE NURSERIES. ORGANIZATIONS GENERALLY PRODUCE FRUIT AND FOREST TREES (80% FOREST, 20% FRUIT). AMONG THE FOREST TREES YOU FIND CEDAR, CASSIA, CHESTNUT, ACACIA, PINE AND MAHOGANY TREES. IN THE FRUIT TREES YOU FIND MAINLY PAPAYA, ORANGE, GRAPEFRUIT, LEMON, MANGO, AND AVOCADO. ORGANIZATIONS DISTRIBUTE THESE SEEDLINGS TO MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS BUT ALSO TO GATHERING PLACES IN THE COMMUNITIES SUCH AS SCHOOLS AND CHURCHES. THESE SEEDLINGS ARE USED TO REPLENISH SPACE THAT IS NEEDED FOR EITHER AGROFORESTRY OR SMALL COMMUNITY FORESTS OF APPROXIMATELY 5-10 HA. TO ACCOMPLISH ALL THESE TASKS DURING THE YEAR, THE COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS ARE SUPPORTED BY LAMBI FUND'S STAFF, PARTICULARLY THE REGIONAL MONITORS WHO ASSIST IN THE PLANNING / IMPLEMENTATION OF ALL PROJECT ACTIVITIES. A TEAM OF NURSERY TECHNICIANS ALSO PROVIDE THEM WITH THE NECESSARY GUIDANCE IN SEEDLING PRODUCTION IN NURSERIES, IN DISTRIBUTION, IN PLANTING AND IN MONITORING TREES.
SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT: THE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM PORTFOLIO IS ONE OF THE MAJOR PROGRAMS IN 2019 THAT COMPRISES OF SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE IN THE FORM OF OX- PLOWING, MILLS, PRODUCTION OF GRAINS AND LEGUMES, AND ANIMAL HUSBANDRY WITH 2 GOAT BREEDING PROJECTS. EACH PROJECT IMPROVES PARTNERS' LIVELIHOOD AND INCOME. THE MEMBERSHIP TOTAL OF LAMBI FUND IN 2019 WAS 2335 INDIVIDUALS; WOMEN ACCOUNTING FOR 1562 (67%) AND 773 MEN OR (33%.) ADDITIONALLY THOSE PROJECTS BENEFIT PEOPLE IN THE COMMUNITY WHO ARE NOT MEMBERS. FOR EXAMPLE, 2000 PEOPLE IN THE POPULATION (MEMBERS AND NON-MEMBERS) HAVE ACCESS TO PRODUCTS PROCESSED THROUGH THE MILLS. BELOW IS A BREAKDOWN OF HOW THE PROJECTS PROMOTE LONG-TERM BUILDING AND THE NUMBER OF LIVES THAT BENEFITTED FROM THEM IN 2019: SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE. THE USE OF OX-PLOWS ALLOWS THE FARMERS TO MAKE FASTER PREPARATION OF LAND FOR PLANTING, AND INCREASE IN CROP YIELD. IN 2019, 2 COMPLETE OX-PLOWS (4 OXEN, PLOWS, ACCESSORIES) WERE ADDED TO THE PROJECTS. ADDITIONALLY VET SERVICES AND WORKFORCE WERE RETAINED FOR THE PLOWING PROCESS. 8 HA OF LAND WAS CULTIVATED YIELDING TO PRODUCTION OF RICE, CORN, LEGUMES, CASSAVA, MILLET. A PORTION OF THE PRODUCTION IS SOLD TO GENERATE INCOME AND THE REMAINING PART IS KEPT STORAGE, WHICH ADDED BENEFITS TO THE FARMERS WHO HAVE GRAIN AVAILABLE FOR THE FOLLOWING PLANTING SEASON. THE MILLS BUILT IN PREVIOUS YEARS CONTINUED TO PROCESS GRAINS LOCALLY. A NEW PROJECT GAVE ACCESS TO 750 INDIVIDUALS TO ITS MILL (1/3 WERE NON-MEMBERS;) AND PROCESSED 79,605 LBS OF RICE OVER A PERIOD OF 6 MONTHS. ANIMAL HUSBANDRY. THE GOAT BREEDING PROJECTS WERE VERY SUCCESSFUL IN ALLOWING PARTNERS TO GAIN INCOME AND ECONOMIC VERSATILITY. GOATS CAN BE USED AS A FOOD SOURCE SUCH AS MILK, CHEESE, AND MEAT FOR PERSONAL USE OR SOLD. WHEN THE GOATS BEGIN TO HAVE OFFSPRING, THOSE CAN BE SOLD OR USED TO GROW THE PARTNERS FOOD SOURCE ENTERPRISE. THE LAMBI FUND ADDED 233 GOATS FOR BREEDING, BETWEEN 2 ORGANIZATIONS.
