CRITTENTON YOUTH SERVICES, INC.IS LOCATED IN MOBILE, ALABAMA. THE MISSION IS TO EDUCATE YOUTH IN A SCHOOL-BASED SETTINGS HOW TO IDENTIFY THE RISK FACTORS ASSOCIATED WITH BEING A VICTIM, TO DEVELOP THE SKILLS THAT STRENGTHEN THEIR SOCIAL, EMOTIONAL, MENTAL AND PHYSICAL WELL-BEING, AND ANY MALFUNCTION SKILLS THAT MAY FOSTER GROWTH IN POSITIVE BEHAVIORS AND ACADEMICS . HEALTH SMARTS IS THE CURRICULUM THAT IS USED TO TEACH ABUSE, BULLYING ,CYBERBULLYING, EXPRESSING /UNDERSTANDING FEELING, TYPES OF VIOLENCE, RESOLVING CONFLICT, TROUBLESOME FEELINGS, SAFE DECISIONS, DEALING WITH GRIEF, HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS, WHAT IS STRESS, HAZING, UNWANTED TOUCHES, ETC TO 6TH AND 7TH GRADERS . SEE ATTACHMENT FOR NUMBER OF ADOLESCENTS WHO PARTICIPATED IN THE PROGRAM AND THE NUMBER SITES (LISTED UNDER YOUTH HEALTH). OLWEUS BULLYING IS THE 2ND YOUTH HEALTH PROGRAM WHICH HAS AN EDUCATIONAL SKILL COMPONENT TO IMPLEMENT WITH 4-5TH GRADERS TO TEACH BULLY PREVENTION SKILLS. SEE ATTACHMENT FOR NUMBERS UNDER OLWEUS.
EDUCATION AND FAMILY SUPPORT IN HOUSE FAMILY SUPPORT FOR PARENTS AND TEENS ON TEEN HEALTH AND SAFETY ISSUES. TEEN CAN BE REFERRED TO OTHER AGENCIES FOR HEALTHCARE AND COUNSELING. SEE ATTACHMENT COMMUNITY OUTREACH.
YOUTH AMBASSADORS ARE SELECTED FROM 11TH AND 12TH GRADERS WHO ARE NOMINATED BY THEIR COUNSELORS, TEACHERS, AND PRINCIPALS BASED ON THEIR CHARACTER AND DESIRE TO HELP THEIR YOUNGER PEERS. AFTER THE NOMINEES ARE INTERVIEWED BY THE CRITTENTON MANAGEMENT TEAM, ONE TO FIVE STUDENTS ARE CHOSEN FROM APPROXIMATELY 14 HIGH SCHOOLS TO BE AMBASSADORS .AMBASSADORS ARE TRAINED IN A WORKSHOP HOW TO MAINTAIN CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT, HOW TO TEACH 12-16 DIFFERENT YOUTH HEALTH TOPICS, CHARACTERISTICS OF MIDDLE SCHOOL YOUTH, AND HOW TO LISTEN BUT NOT BECOME INVOLVED IN SOLVING AN ADOLESCENT PROBLEM.
