Organizations Filed Purposes: The mission of the Danish American Archive and Library(DAAL) is to collect, preserve, interpret and make available to scholars and researchers the written, aural and visual materials documenting the lives of Danish immigrants and their decendants.

The DAAL collects, organizes and stores documents such as letters, school papers and records, church records and sermons, business records, photographs and other documents relating to Danish American history. The DAAL is designated the conservator of all music collections from our sister Danish American organizations, and we have substantial collections of audio tape recordings, videos and home movies. The library portion of the DAAL contains more than 13,000 books in Danish and English, all related to Danish and Danish American subjects including Dana College. All of the materials we receive are sorted, catalogued and stored in acid-free envelopes and boxes in order to preserve original documents, some of which are more than 125 years old. They are stored in such a way to make the information contained in the documents easily accesible. In 2020 DAAL hosted 39 volunteers from five states (down significantly due to covid) and received materials from 66 people from 20 states.t

The DAAL operates a combined archive and library used for research by teachers, authors, genealogists and members of the public in general. We have created a digital archive that allows researchers to access digitized materials at no charge. A major collection featured online is the Vig papers, which are of special interest to descendants of former inhabitants of Washington County Nebraska, where the DAAL is located. Although some portions of this collections focus on persons of Danish descent, most sections deal with Washington County residents of all backgrounds. Very useful for genealogists, these documents summarize information about each family, including references to articles in local newspapers. During 2020 we had 345 visitors and researchers online and from 26states,Argentina,Germany,Canada,Denmark, and England. In addition DAAL has presented college-level archive research methods classes and hosted interns from four different Universities.

The DAAL is publicized through the distribution of materials that describe the experiences and contributions to American society of Danish immigrants and their descendants. The DAAL has publicized, sold and distributed books by and about Danes and Danish Americans and their experiences. We publish a newsletter three times per year, which is distributed to 1,392 households in 49 states,Washington DC,Canada,Denmark, and Japan. The DAALs Danish Children Growing up American traveling photo exhibit has appeared in nine venues in Nebraska,Iowa, and Colorado. We have provided supplemental photographs, materials, and artifacts to the Blair Public Lbrary and Technology Center and to the Washington County Historical Museum for other exhibits. We continue to work with both of these organizations to highlight Danish history in Washington County. We also work with the Dana College Alumni and Friends Association on their events such as their annual homecoming celebration.
