THE NATIONAL PARK SERVICE PARTNERED WITH SAVE ELLIS ISLAND TO RESTORE 29 HISTORIC HOSPITAL AND OUTBUILDINGS AND 14 ACRES OF GREEN SPACE ON THE SOUTH SIDE OF ELLIS ISLAND. THE FOUNDATION RAISES THE FUNDS TO RESTORE, PRESERVE AND MAINTAIN THE BUILDINGS, OVERSEES THE RESTORATION PROJECT AND PROVIDES EDUCATION PROGRAMS, TOURS, EXHIBITS AND EVENTS TO REALIZE THE FULL POTENTIAL OF ELLIS ISLAND AS AN UNPARALLELED DESTINATION FOR BROAD PUBLIC PARTICIPATION AND ENGAGEMENT.
TO REALIZE THE FULL POTENTIAL OF ELLIS ISLAND THROUGH THE RESTORATION AND REUSE OF 29 UNRESTORED HISTORIC HOSPITAL AND OUTBUILDINGS FOR THE INSPIRATION, ENJOYMENT AND EDUCATION VISITORS FROM AROUND THE WORLD.
THE ORGANIZATION LEASES TWO OF THE RESTORED BUILDINGS FROM THE NATIONAL PARK SERVICE. THE BUILDINGS ARE USED FOR RENTAL OFFICE SPACE, EXHIBITS, TOURS AND EDUCATION PROGRAMS. SAVE ELLIS ISLAND'S RESPONSIBILITY, AS THE LESSEE, IS TO PROVIDE APPROPRIATE LIABILITY AND OTHER INSURANCE FOR THE PROPERTY AND MAINTENANCE AND UPGRADES TO THE BUILDINGS AS NEEDED. SUB-LEASED OFFICE SPACE AND PAID PROGRAMS HELP TO DEFRAY THE COST OF OPERATING THE LEASED SPACES. SINCE ITS INCEPTION, SAVE ELLIS ISLAND HAS RESTORED SEVERAL OF THE BUILDINGS INCLUDING THE MARINE CORRIDORS THAT CONNECT THE RESTORED SIDE OF THE ISLAND TO THE UNRESTORED SIDE, THEREBY GIVING ACCESS TO SELECT AREAS OF THE HOSPITALS TO THE PUBLIC FOR THE FIRST TIME IN OVER 60 YEARS. APPROXIMATELY 1 IMMIGRANT OUT OF 10 WHO ARRIVED AT ELLIS ISLAND RECEIVED MEDICAL ATTENTION AT THIS FACILITY. IN 2020, SAVE ELLIS ISLAND COMPLETED THE FULL RESTORATION OF THE 1937 RECREATION PAVILION AT A COST OF $1 MILLION. THE NEWLY RENOVATED SPACE WAS IMMEDIATELY INCORPORATED INTO THE 90-MINUTE HARD-HAT TOUR. NOW EVERYONE CAN EXPERIENCE THIS COMPELLING PART OF THE IMMIGRANT EXPERIENCE FIRST-HAND BY JOINING A HARD HAT GUIDED TOUR OR EDUCATION PROGRAM OF THE HOSPITAL.
SAVE ELLIS ISLAND IS AUTHORIZED BY THE NATIONAL PARK SERVICE TO PROVIDE 90-MINUTE DOCENT LED HARD HAT TOURS AND PROGRAMS THAT ARE LED BY A CORPS OF 35 VOLUNTEERS AND A PAID STAFF OF EDUCATORS. TOURS AND PROGRAMS ARE AVAILABLE IN SEVERAL LANGUAGES AND ASL AND HELD IN THE REHABILITATED AND UNRESTORED BUILDINGS. IN 2014 THE ORGANIZATION COLLABORATED WITH RENOWNED FRENCH ARTIST JR TO INSTALL AN ART EXHIBIT UNFRAMED: ELLIS ISLAND THAT FEATURES LIFE SIZE HISTORIC PHOTOGRAPHS OF ELLIS ISLAND IMMIGRANTS INSTALLED ON 22 INTERIOR WALLS OF THE HOSPITALS. JR IS KNOWN THROUGHOUT THE WORLD FOR HIS PERVASIVE ART. THE EXHIBIT IS KEY IN THE INTERPRETATION OF THE STORIES OF THE ELLIS ISLAND IMMIGRANT HOSPITAL. THE EXHIBIT HELPS VISITORS TO UNDERSTAND THE IMMIGRANT JOURNEY TO AMERICA THROUGH ELLIS ISLAND AND CONTINUES TO RECEIVE WORLDWIDE ATTENTION. IN 2020 SAVE ELLIS ISLAND FILMED BOTH THE 90-MINUTE HARD HAT TOUR AND THE UNFRAMED: ELLIS ISLAND EXHIBIT AS PART OF THE ORGANIZATION'S VIRTUAL VISITATION AND EDUCATION EXPERIENCE. ALSO AVAILABLE TWICE MONTHLY ARE VIRTUAL PROGRAMS INCLUDING THE POPULAR AUTHOR SERIES. AUTHORS FROM VARIOUS GENRES, HISTORY, ART AND CULTURE DISCUSS TOPICS FROM IMMIGRATION THROUGH ELLIS ISLAND TO PHOTOGRAPHY AND ART.
