In 2019 we reported on a groundbreaking study - the first ever large-scale longitudinal study of IoT firmware safety features using custom software we created to perform static feature extraction and analysis. Our study evaluated 6000 product firmware images from 18 vendors spanning i15 years worth of releases; it is the largest report of its kind, giving an unprecedented and comprehensive view of the IoT sectors posture with regards to basic software safety features. It has long been common wisdom that IoT has serious security flaws, but until now no studies quantified the problem, which hindered the development of effective solutions to the problem.We were invited to present findings from this study to congressional aides and offices so they can use our data to inform their public safety policy work in the field of IoT.We also presented a subset of our findings at the Shmoocon 2019 security conference.In the process of performing this study, we found andpublished a major vulnerability in an entire class of architectures common to a majority of IoT devices. This vulnerability had been present for years, and with our release of this information we made consumers aware of it and provided vendors with the motivation to finally fix it. A patch was released a month after our report.We also developed and built our novel dynamic crash testing tool (fuzzer), designed to collect high-fidelity information from the tests without requiring human assistance or intervention a novel capability not found in any other fuzzers we have studied.
