TO ENSURE THE PROTECTION OF THE NATURAL RESOURCES OF THE HEADWATERS REGION OF THE RARITAN RIVER BASIN THROUGH SCIENCE, EDUCATION, ADVOCACY, LAND PRESERVATION AND STEWARDSHIP.
TO PRESERVE AND PROTECT THE HEADWATERS REGION OF THE RARITAN RIVER BASIN.
BIOLOGICAL, CHEMICAL AND BACTERIAL STREAM MONITORING WAS ACCOMPLISHED AT 72 SITES LOCATED IN THE RARITAN RIVER HEADWATERS REGION BY 25 CITIZEN SCIENTISTS AND RHA STAFF. WATER QUALITY DATA WAS PRESENTED TO THE NJDEP, EPA, MUNICIPALITIES AND TO THE PUBLIC THROUGH LOCAL MEDIA, A "DATA REVEAL" EVENT AND AN ONLINE REPORT CARD. THROUGH RHA'S WELL TEST PROGRAM, CITIZENS IN 32 COMMUNITIES TESTED THEIR DRINKING WATER FOR CONTAMINANTS - OVER 3,000 TESTS WERE CONDUCTED. RHA'S SCIENCE DIRECTOR AND WATERSHED SCIENTIST PUBLISHED A PEER-REVIEWED REPORT ON REDUCING PUBLIC EXPOSURE TO COMMON, HARMFULL WELL WATER CONTAMINANTS WITH THE JOURNAL OF WATER AND HEALTH. RHA CONDUCTED A YEARLONG NEIGHBORHOOD STREAM CLEAN UP PROGRAM. 600 VOLUNTEERS PARTICIPATED IN HANDS-ON CONSERVATION AND STEWARDSHIP ACTIVITIES INCLUDING TREE PLANTING, TRAIL CLEARING, AND INVASIVE PLANT REMOVAL. EDUCATION PROGRAMS WERE ADAPTED TO MEET HEALTH AND SAFETY STANDARDS DURING THE PANDEMIC. NATURE CAMPS WERE HELD THROUGH JULY AND AUGUST AND A NEW NATURE POD AFTER-SCHOOL AND WEEKEND PROGRAMS BEGAN IN THE FALL. AN ONLINE RESOURCE HUB WAS LAUNCHED SPRING 2020 TO ACCOMMODATE FAMILIES AND CHILDREN COPING WITH FRAGMENTED SCHOOL SCHEDULES - OFFERING ACCESS TO LESSONS IN NATURE AND OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES. WEBINARS WERE DEVELOPED TO INFORM AND EDUCATE MUNICIPAL LEADERS ON TOPICS INCLUDING CLIMATE RESILIENCE, STORMWATER MANAGEMENT, AND LEAD IN DRINKING WATER. THE ASSOCIATION WORKED TO ADVOCATE FOR WATER PROTECTION POLICIES WITH PARTNERS INCLUDING NJ HIGHLANDS COALITION, NJ LEAGUE OF CONSERVATION VOTERS, LEAD IN DRINKING WATER TASK FORCE, ASSOCIATION FOR NJ ENVIROMENTAL COMMISSIONS, NJ WATERSHED COUNCIL, THE WATERSHED INSTITUTE, NJ CONSERVATION FOUNDATION, AND OTHERS. RHA IS AN ACCREDITATED LAND TRUST. WE HOLD, MONITOR AND ENFORCE 33 CONSERVATION EASEMENTS, REPRESENTING 890 ACRES AND OWN AND MANAGE 10 PRESERVES AS OPEN SPACE FOR PUBLIC ACCESS INCLUDING FAIRVIEW FARM, A 170 ACRE WILDLIFE PRESERVE THAT OFFERS 5 MILES OF HIKING TRAILS, A BIRD & BUTTERFLY GARDEN, A SCIENCE AND EDUCATION CENTER, AND MODEL STEWARDSHIP PROJECTS.
