TO PROMOTE THE WELFARE OF US SEAFARERS & THEIR DEPENDENTS, SEAFARERS OF ALL NATIONS, US GOVERNMENT, MILITARY & CIVILIAN PERSONNEL, & OTHERS ENGAGED IN THE MARITIME INDUSTRY.
United Seamen's Service (USS) Yokohama, Japan United Seamen's Service operates a seafarer's center in Yokohama, Japan which is open 365 days per year to support seafarers transiting the busy port of Yokohama. USS Yokohama serves American seafarers crewing U.S. Flag ships and international seafarers from foreign flag vessels transiting the port as well as the local port community. In 2019 (Jan-Dec), USS Yokohama provided services to 3,662 American and international seafarers and 6,940 local port community members. USS Yokohama services include the following: Transportation: -Shuttle van service provided for visiting seafarers from the ships to the USS center Number of seafarers provided with transportation: 2019 (Jan-Dec) - 1,218 Ship visits: -Center director & staff visit crew at the ship to provide port information & services Ship visits in 2019 (Jan-Dec) - 191 Counseling: USS Yokohama center director and staff support visiting seafarers with: -A listening ear and supportive environment - the time at sea can be isolating as seafarers work long hours and crew numbers have become smaller. Crew members on international flag vessels often come from several different nationalities and can speak different languages adding to the sense of isolation -Referrals to local doctors or dentist and occasionally for a lawyer regarding a legal matter -Hospital visits - center director will visit seafarers that are in hospital -Advocacy on behalf of seafarers who run into problems with local port authorities -Seafarers provided counseling and psychological support if needed Telephone and internet access: -Seafarers in port after extended periods of time at sea are able to use USS Yokohama facilities to make calls to family and friends and access the internet Communications facilitated in 2019 (Jan-Dec) - 2,436 Recreation and sports activities available for visiting seafarers: -Multi function court for tennis, basketball, volleyball and 5x5 man soccer -Indoor pool tables and ping pong -Annual Sports Week held in September for seafarers from all ships in port to be able to compete in a number of sporting events (organized in cooperation with the Yokohama Port and Harbour Bureau and International Sports for Seafarers Committee). From July 17 - 21, 2019, 94 seafarers and 13 ships in port at the time participated in the competition. Dining: -Seafarers are able to access a good meal at moderate prices Entertainment and special events: -Holiday celebrations; Maritime Day in May -Crew parties and local port community functions Participants in special events in 2019 (Jan-Dec) - 460 Library services: -Seafarers are able to pick up a good book to read and relax in the reading room Ship libraries exchanged with visiting crew 2019 (Jan-Dec) - 698 Shopping assistance: -Seafarers making purchases at the center gift shop for personal items or gifts to send back to loved ones at home 2019 (Jan-Dec) - 1,685 Currency exchange: -Provided money exchange service at the USS Yokohama center and during ship visits for visiting crew members for use during their short stays in port 2019 (Jan-Dec) - 2,205 United Seamen's Service (USS) Diego Garcia, B.I.O.T. United Seamen's Service operates a seafarer's center in Diego Garcia, B.I.O.T. which is open 365 days per year to support U.S. Merchant Marines crewing U.S. Naval Service pre-positioning vessels on station in Diego Garcia (DG) and the island community comprised of U.S. Navy, British Navy and civilian support personnel employed on the island. In 2019 (Jan-Dec), USS DG provided services to 16,170 American seafarers and 33,406 U.S. Government, military and civilian personnel stationed on Diego Garcia. USS DG services include the following: Transportation: -Van transport provided for seafarers to/ from the airport and other destinations on DG -Number of seafarers provided with transportation: 2019 (Jan-Dec)- 306 Ship visits: -Center director & staff visits to crew at the ship to provide port information and services -Ship visits in YTD 2019 (Jan-Dec) - 81 Counseling: Center director and staff provide support to visiting seafarers with: -A listening ear and supportive environment - the time at sea can be isolating as seafarers work long hours and crew numbers have become smaller. Island life also can be stressful. -Hospital visits - center director visits hospitalized seafarers -Detention visits for seafarers who have had problems with the authorities -Seafarers provided counseling and psychological support if needed Telephone and internet access: -Seafarers are stationed on the island without family or loved ones. After time at sea, returning seafarers are able to use USS DG facilities to make calls to family and friends and access the internet. -Communications facilitated in 2019 (Jan-Dec) - 9,219 Recreation and sports activities available for visiting seafarers: -Beachfront property for swimming and snorkeling -Fishing, basketball, softball, golf, soccer, volleyball, rugby, racquetball and tennis are all available for seafarers on the island; schedule information is circulated by the USS center -Island plantation tours -Indoor darts -Indoor pool tables Dining: -Seafarers are able to access a good meal at moderate prices Entertainment and special events: -Weekly open microphone music nights; Holiday celebrations; Ship and military unit parties: Maritime Day in May -Special events and sports organized in 2019 (Jan-Dec) -830 Library services: -seafarers are able to pick up a good book to read and relax in the reading room -ship libraries exchanged with visiting crew 2019 (Jan-Dec) -1,053 United Seamen's Service (USS) Bremerhaven United Seamen's Service operates a seafarer's center in Bremerhaven, Germany which is open 365 days per year to support seafarers transiting the busy port of Bremerhaven. USS Bremerhaven serves American seafarers crewing U.S. Flag ships and international seafarers from foreign flag vessels transiting the port as well as the local port community. In 2019 (Jan 1-Dec. 31), USS Bremerhaven provided services to 1,272 American and international seafarers and 5,867 U.S. Government, military and civilian personnel and other persons engaged in the international maritime industry. USS Bremerhaven services include the following: Transportation: -Shuttle van service provides daily transportation for visiting seafarers from the ships to the USS center and points beyond for shopping and recreation -Number of seafarers provided with transportation: 2019 (Jan-Dec) - 209 Ship visits: -Center director and staff visit crew at the ship to provide port information & services Ship visits in 2019 (Jan - Dec) - 105 Counseling: Center director and staff provide support to visiting seafarers with: -A listening ear and supportive environment - the time at sea can be isolating as seafarers work long hours and crew numbers have become smaller.
