THE MISSION OF THE YOGI BERRA MUSEUM & LEARNING CENTER IS TO SUSTAIN AND PROMOTE THE VALUES OF RESPECT, PERSEVERANCE, SPORTSMANSHIP AND EXCELLENCE THROUGH INCLUSIVE, CULTURALLY DIVERSE SPORTS-BASED EDUCATIONAL EXHIBITS AND PROGRAMS.
THE MUSEUM OFFERS STEM, LITERACY AND SOCIAL JUSTICE PROGRAMS TO STUDENTS FROM UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES THROUGHOUT NEW JERSEY, INCLUDING NEWARK, PATERSON AND ELIZABETH. THE MUSEUM ALSO OFFERS SCHOLARSHIPS FOR OUR SUMMER BASEBALL AND SOFTBALL CAMPS TO LOW-INCOME AND AT-RISK YOUTH. THE MUSEUM IS A NONPROFIT 501(C)3 ORGANIZATION. ALL MONEY RAISED THROUGH DONATIONS, GRANTS AND FUNDRAISING ARE USED TO SUPPORT MUSEUM EXHIBITS, PROGRAMS AND CAMPS. THE MUSEUM'S YOUTH DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS EXPOSE YOUNG PEOPLE TO YOGI'S VALUES WHILE AT THE SAME TIME, INTRODUCING BASEBALL TO CHILDREN WHO MIGHT OTHERWISE NEVER HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO EXPERIENCE THE SPORT. THIS CURRENT SCHOOL YEAR OVER 2,000 STUDENTS PARTICIPATED IN OUR PROGRAMS AND MORE THAN HALF COMING FROM UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES IN THE AREA. IN ADDITION, 40 YOUNG PEOPLE WERE GIVEN FULL SCHOLARSHIPS TO THE MUSEUM'S BASEBALL AND SOFTBALL CAMPS.
THE MUSEUM OFFERS A NUMBER OF PUBLIC PROGRAMS THAT CONNECT COMMUNITY AROUND A SHARED LOVE OF SPORTS, INCLUDING BOOKSIGNINGS, PANEL DISCUSSIONS AND EXHIBIT OPENINGS. OUR ANNUAL YOGI TRIBUTE DAY INVITES FANS, FRIENDS AND FAMILIES TO COME TOGETHER FOR A FREE DAY OF CELEBRATION WITH MUSIC, SPORTS TRIVIA, FOOD TRUCKS AND MORE. THE MUSEUM'S BEST TEAMMATE AWARD HONORS A STUDENT ATHLETE FROM EACH OF THE 40 SCHOOLS IN THE SUPER ESSEX CONFERENCE, PAYING TRIBUTE TO THOSE YOUNG PEOPLE WHO MAY NOT BE THE BEST PERFORMERS ON THE FIELD, BUT WHO, LIKE YOGI, ARE THE BEST TEAMMATES.
THE EDUCATION DEPARTMENT OFFERED A RANGE OF STANDARDS-ALIGNED PROGRAMS IN 2019, LEVERAGING SPORTS AND BASEBALL AS A VEHICLE TO ADDRESS IMPORTANT ACADEMIC SUBJECTS, AS WELL AS CHALLENGING SOCIAL ISSUES OF TODAY. THE PROGRAMS SERVED APPROXIMATELY 7,500 STUDENTS WITH FOCUS ON STEM, LANGUAGE ARTS, HISTORY AND SOCIAL STUDIES. ALL EDUCATION PROGRAMS ARE INFUSED WITH THE VALUES THAT DRIVE THE MUSEUM'S MISSION: RESPECT, TEAMWORK, DETERMINATION AND EXCELLENCE.
THE MUSEUM OFFERS TWO CAMPS FOR SOFTBALL AND BASEBALL DURING THE SUMMER. APPROXIMATELY 40 ATTEND THE BASEBALL CAMP AND 30 THE SOFTBALL CAMP. 50% OF THOSE ATTENDING ARE ON FULL SCHOLARSHIP.
