Paper Mill Playhouse has been a cherished New Jersey arts institution for more than 80 years, with a national reputation that continues to grow. As a producing theater, Paper Mills collaboration with other regional theaters and leading independent producers brings audiences the best in musical theater, from celebrated revivals to groundbreaking new works. Paper Mill also provides a platform for emerging artists to hone their craft. Education and outreach programs nurture young peoples creativity and empathy. Paper Mill brings decades of leadership in cultural access and is at the forefront of autism-friendly theater. Paper Mill Playhouse received the 2016 Regional Theatre Tony Award in recognition of its contribution to the national field. The 2019-20 season featured "Chasing Rainbows", Rodgers + Hammersteins "Cinderella", and "Unmasked", before the COVID-19 pandemic and New Jersey State ban on public gatherings caused the cancelation of "Sister Act", the world premiere of "The Wanderermany Education programs. With no previous model for remote learning, Paper Mill successfully pivoted many Education programs online. Yet, COVID caused steep losses at the box office. Paper Mill reduced the fiscal year-end deficit its first in eight years - through fundraising and subscriber strategies.
Paper Mills Education programs engage young people in the joy of live theatre through the Adopt-A-School Project, childrens shows, PAPER MILL THEATRE SCHOOL, RISING STAR AWARDS, AND THE SUMMER MUSICAL THEATRE CONSERVATORY AND ITS NEW VOICES CONCERTS. PAPER MILL HAS DECADES OF LEADERSHIP IN BREAKING BARRIERS TO THE ARTS, INCLUDING ACCESSIBILITY FOR INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES AND CULTURAL PARTNERSHIPS WITH NEW JERSEY'S SCHOOLS AND COMMUNITY-BASED ORGANIZATIONS. AS THE FIRST THEATER IN THE COUNTRY TO PRESENT A COMPREHENSIVE AUTISM-FRIENDLY PERFORMANCE, PAPER MILL EXPANDED ITS OFFERINGS OF WELCOMING AND INCLUSIVE SHOWS, THEATER CLASSES AND OUTREACH FOR CHILDREN WITH AUTISM AND DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES, THEIR FAMILIES AND FRIENDS.
