TO ADMINISTER FUNDS AND TO DEVELOP PROGRAMS AND PROJECTS DESIGNED TO IMPROVE THE CONDITIONS OF DISADVANTAGED PEOPLE IN THE COMMUNITY.
AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS: ELEMENTARY AFTER SCHOOL-THE LEAGUE'S 2019-2020 AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS FOCUSED ON STUDENT ACADEMICS AND ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES AT THE LORD STIRLING, LINCOLN ANNEX, A. CHESTER REDSAHW AND PAUL ROBESON ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS. THE ELEMENTARY PROGRAMS WERE DIRECTED TO 67 THIRD,FOURTH AND FIFTH GRADERS AT THE LORD STIRLING AND A CHESTER REDSHAW SCHOOLS, 28 FIFTH THROUGH SEVENTH GRADERS AT LINCOLN ANNEX SCHOOL, AND 73 THIRD THROUGH SIXTH GRADERS AT THE PAUL ROBESON SCHOOL. IN MARCH OF 2020 IN-CLASSROOM SERVICES WERE ELIMINATED AND ACTIVITIES WERE CONDUCTED IN A VIRTUAL SETTING. UP UNTIL MID-MARCH, PROGRAMS OPERATED ON A 3:15-6:00PM SCHEDULE, WITH THE MANDATORY CHANGE BASED ON THE SCHOOL DISTRICT'S COVID-19 REACTION.VIRTUAL PROGRAM OPERATIONS MOVED TO A TUESDAY, WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY 3:45-5:15PM SESSION. MIDDLE SCHOOL EXTENDED DAY PROGRAMS WERE ALSO AFFECTED BY THE SCHOOL DISTRICT'S MANDATORY EDUCATIONAL ADJUSTMENT, WHICH AFFECTED 32 STUDENTS PRIOR TO MARCH AND CONDUCTED IN A VIRTUAL FORMAT TO THE END OF THE SCHOOL YEAR. PRIOR TO THE DISTRICT'S INSTRUCTIONAL PLATFORM, OPERATIONAL HOURS WERE 2:30-5:30PM FOR THE MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS. THEREAFTER, PROGRAMS WERE CONDUCTED IN A GOOGLE CLASSROOM FORMAT OPERATING THREE AFTERNOONS PER WEEK. 7TH/8TH GRADE LEADERSHIP PROGRAMS: THE 7TH GRADE STEP-UP PROGRAM PROVIDES OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS OF NEW BRUNSWICK SCHOOLS TO STRENGTHEN SKILLS NEEDED TO REACH THEIR FULLEST POTENTIAL AS LIFE-LONG LEARNERS AND PRODUCTIVE CITIZENS. STUDENTS WHO DEMONSTRATE LEADERSHIP POTENTIAL ARE SELF NOMINATED OR SELECTED BY THE SCHOOL PRINCIPAL AND TEACHERS. THE 8TH GRADE LEADERSHIP PROGRAM IS DIRECTED TOWARDS 8TH GRADE STUDENTS DISTRICT WIDE, TO DEVELOP POSITIVE PERSONAL SKILLS; ANGER MANAGEMENT, DECISION-MAKING, GOAL SETTING, AND TEAMWORK. TOTAL NUMBER OF SUDENTS 99, WITH 78 STUDENTS COMPLETING PROGRAM ACTIVITIES DURING THE 2019-2020 SCHOOL YEAR. UNTAGGED GENTS-THIS MINORITY MALES MENTORING PROGRAM IS DIRECTED TO MIDDLE SCHOOL AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS, AGES 14 YEARS AND OLDER. THE PROGRAM IS A CIVIC LEAGUE PARTNERSHIP WITH THE NEW BRUNSWICK BOARD OF EDUCATION AND THE NEW BRUNSWICK HUB TEEN CENTER. THIS PROGRAM IS CONDUCTED IN A ZOOM CLASSROOM FORMAT. 150 MIDDLE SCHOOL/HIGH SCHOOL/COLLEGE MALES IN A VIRTUAL FORMAT. LADIES OF VISION IS A MINORITY FEMALE MENTORING PROGRAM DIRECTED TO MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS AGES 14 AND OLDER. THE PROGRAM IS A CIVIC LEAGUE PARTNERSHIP WITH THE NEW BRUNSWICK BOARD OF EDUCATION AND THE NEW BRUNSWICK HUB TEEN CENTER. THIS PROGRAM IS CONDUCTED IN A ZOOM CLASSROOM FORMAT. 187 FEMALES.
GEORGES ROAD GATEWAY PROGRAM IS A NEIGHBORHOOD IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM DIRECTED TO RESIDENTS IN THE GEORGES ROAD CORRIDOR. SPECIFIC ACTIVITIES INCLUDE CIVIC EMPOWERMENT, NEIGHBORHOOD PLANNING AND CULTURAL/RECREATIONAL EVENTS. THIS PLANNING PROGRAM IS SUPPORTED BY A GRANT FROM BRISTOL-MYERS SQUIBB AND OTHER PROGRAM PARTNERS.
STUDENT SUPPORT INTERCEDE SCHOLARS-A YEAR-ROUND PROGRAM THAT IS CONDUCTED MONTHLY WITH GRADUATES OF THE WHITNEY M YOUNG, JR/ROSA L PARKS SUMMER INSTITUTES. THIS PROGRAM IS DIRECTED TO HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS. 34 PARTICIPANTS. WHITNEY M YOUNG, JR/ROSA L PARKS I SUMMER INSTITUTES-THIS PROGRAM IS A SIX WEEK EMPLOYMENT AND EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE FOR YOUTH 14 YEARS OF AGE AND OLDER. THE NEW BRUNSWICK BOARD OF EDUCATION AND PRIVATE FUNDS SUPPORT THE PROGRAM. THOSE PARTICIPANTS WHO MAINTAIN ACCEPTABLE GRADES AND COMPLETE REQUIREMENTS OF THE INTERCEDE SCHOLARS WERE ELIGIBLE FOR THE ROSA L PARKS WORK EXPERIENCE SUMMER INSTITUTE. 28 STUDENTS ROSA L PARKS II SUMMER INSTITUTE- THIS IS AN EXPANDED EDUCATION/EMPLOYMENT EXPERIENCE OF ROSA L PARKS I SUMMER INSTITUTE. THIS PROGRAM EXPOSES ITS PARTICIPANTS TO JOB SITE EXPERIENCE AT THE RUTGERS-ROBERT WOOD JOHNSON MEDICAL SCHOOL. 9 STUDENTS THE 2019 AMBASSADOR SUMMER PROGRAMS OCCURRED WITH STUDENTS FROM PAUL ROBESON AND A. CHESTER REDSHAW SCHOOLS FOR A FOUR-WEEK PERIOD INVOLVING RISING SIXTH AND SEVENTH GRADERS WITH PERFORMING AND VISUAL ART ACTIVITIES. ENROLLMENT WAS 36 STUDENTS, WITH 32 COMPLETING THE VIRTUAL PROGRAM.
