PILLAR I: ECONOMIC MOBILITYECONOMIC MOBILITY REMAINS THE GREAT UNFINISHED BUSINESS OF THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT. FIFTY YEARS AGO, DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR., SPOKE ABOUT THE EXISTENCE OF "TWO AMERICAS" SHARPLY DIVIDED BY RACE. THE INSTITUTE IS COMMITTED TO BRIDGING THESE "TWO AMERICAS" THROUGH RESEARCH AND ADVOCACY. THIS WORK OF THE INSTITUTE INCLUDES RESEARCH AND POLICY ADVOCACY ON HOUSING, THE RACIAL WEALTH GAP, AND LENDING PRACTICES.

PILLAR II: CRIMINAL JUSTICETHE INSTITUTE IS WORKING TO CREATE A RATIONAL AND EFFECTIVE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM THAT STRENGTHENS COMMUNITIES BY TREATING PEOPLE, PARTICULARLY THE MOST VULNERABLE AMONG US, FAIRLY AND EQUALLY; PROVIDES ALTERNATIVES TO INCARCERATION; ENSURES RACIAL EQUALITY; AND INCREASES LAW ENFORCEMENT RESPONSIVENESS, ACCOUNTABILITY, AND TRANSPARENCY. IN PARTICULAR, THE INSTITUTE'S WORK FOCUSES ON TRANSFORMING OUR YOUTH JUSTICE SYSTEM AND REFORMING AND REIMAGINING POLICING PRACTICES.

PILLAR III: CIVIC ENGAGEMENTWE ARE WORKING TO MAKE THE PROMISE OF DEMOCRACY REAL FOR PEOPLE OF COLOR ACROSS NEW JERSEY BY WORKING TO EXPAND ACCESS TO THE POLLS AND INCREASING DEMOCRATIC PARTICIPATION OPPORTUNITIES FOR ALL NEW JERSEY RESIDENTS. OUR CURRENT WORK INCLUDES ELECTION MONITORING, ADVOCACY TO RESTORE THE RIGHT TO VOTE TO INCARCERATED PEOPLE, AND COLLABORATING TO ENSURE THAT THE STATE'S REDISTRICTING PLANS ARE FAIR AND RACIALLY EQUITABLE.
