Organizations Filed Purposes:
The T. Thomas Fortune Foundation was established to fulfill five initiatives:1. EDUCATE the public about the impact of T. Thomas Fortune's life and work as a journalist, writer and activist on civil rights and African American History;2. ADVOCATE for human rights and social justice broadly and in response to local, regional and national issues of the day and on behalf of current economic and human rights issues impacting education and communities;3. Promote better human relations and journalistic integrity and excellence, especially among the upcoming generations of social justice advocates and truth tellers;4. PRESERVE the National Historic Landmark home of T. Thomas Fortune as a Cultural Center and gathering place for education, research, community engagement, organizing and celebration;5. MAINTAIN the Cultural Center through fundraising, and sustain its operation as owner and manager, providing exhibition, research and meeting space for educational programming
The purpose of the T. Thomas Fortune Foundation is to preserve and further the civil rights and social justice legacy of T. Thomas Fortune through community outreach, education and public programming.
The T. Thomas Fortune Cultural Center presented a robust 2019 inaugural season of programs and community outreach. The 2019 Black History Month celebration featured the first of two cultural documentaries included in "The Monmouth County Freedom Story", series produced by the Cultural Center in conjunction with the Monmouth County Historical Commission. The long running "AfricanAmerican Read In" program was an important part of the Black History Month celebration also. For Women's History Month, "Miss Alma's story (the 2nd installment of the documentary series) was featured during Women's History Month. Alma Harvey Penn was the first African American supervisor of nurses in the state of New Jersey. She worked at the former Marlboro Psychiatric Hospital.Our Fortune Tellers program for youth has been successful in fostering social skills and technological skills for our enrolled Fortune Teller ambassadors. They participated in our "Open House" and were an important part of the Martin Luther King Day Celebration. The 14 year old piano prodigy, Emilio Rivera, performed to a sold out audience.The Afrofuturism exhibit and lecture from Dr. Walter Greason, was another highlight of the 2019 season that drew a sold-out audience. Other presentations were made and open to the public. Fair Share Housing representative Eric Dobson, reported on the dismal record of affordable housing in Monmouth County, and our Financial Literacy program with Ronald Bernstein was also very well received.The building with the Cultural Center was donated to the Foundation on February 24, 2019. The Cultural Center opened its doors on May 24, 2019, and since then, has held a number of events including readings, lectures and training sessions, all focused on social justice issues.
