OUR MISSION IS TO CREATE GREAT AMERICAN THEATER BY DEVELOPING AND PRODUCING NEW WORKS AND WORLD MASTERPIECES. WE CULTIVATE AN AUDIENCE THAT CHERISHES THE INTIMATE JOY OF THEATER, ENRICHED WHEN SHARED BY A COMMUNITY OF OTHERS.
The 2019-2020 Season continued our commitment to bring extraordinary artists to Red Bank and to create a season of great American theater. This years productions included CYRANO, the world premiere of LOVE IN HATE NATION, Shakespeares TWELFTH NIGHT and August Wilsons RADIO GOLF. In March 2020 the remainder of the 2019-2020 season was cancelled due the Covid-19 Pandemic. Cancelled productions included the world premiere of THE HOMBRES and Ruben Santiago Hudsons LACKAWANNA BLUES.
Two Rivers arts education initiatives are central to our commitment to introduce young people to the theater; create opportunities for them to engage with professional theater artists; and cultivate a new generation of theatergoers. Programs include TheaterWorks and No Seats Empty: Total Experience, which reach underserved youth; Metro Scholars, a year-long internship for high school juniors; student matinees; Summer Theater Intensives, for young people in grades 7-12. Our A LITTLE SHAKESPEARE program, which introduces the works of Shakespeare to hundreds of young people each year, featured an adaptation of TWELFTH NIGHT performed by local high-school students.
Two River is recognized in the national theater community for our new-play commissioning program, which launched in 2010 and has to date offered 17 commissions to gifted playwrights, composers, and lyricists. Other play-development programs include the 2nd year of the Emerging Playwrights group, readings, workshops, and retreats; an annual Cabaret of New Songs for the Musical Theater in association with NYUs Graduate Musical Theatre Writing program; an ongoing residency with Clubbed Thumb; and Crossing Borders (Cruzando Fronteras), a five-day festival of play readings and music by Latinx theater artists that drew more audience members than ever before.
