Anchor House Inc.'s mission is to provide a safe haven where abused, runaway, homeless and at-risk youth and their families are empowered to succeed and thrive.
The Anchor House Shelter provides safe shelter and crisis intervention services for abused, runaway and homeless youth ages 12 to 17. Residential services include shelter, food, clothing, medical, dental and mental health care. Residents and outclients received individual, family and group counseling, life skills education, educational preparation, job readiness skills, substance abuse prevention and counseling, transportation, recreation, and service linkages. Aftercare counseling and support groups are available to residents, at-risk community youth and their families. A total of 45 youth resided in the Shelter this fiscal year. The School Outreach Program provided 81 group sessions to students in schools throughout Mercer County and 52 individual sessions to students at these schools and Shelter residents.
The Anchorage Transitional Living Program provides shelter, food, clothing, medical attention, psychological evaluations, therapy, individual and group counseling, life skills training, employment and educations services to homeless youth ages 18-21 to ensure their successful transition to independence. This fiscal year, nine youth resided in the program, and all completed educational goals of completing their high school education, and/or pursing or attending college and vocational programs. The average stay was 11 months. Discharged youth transitioned into safe, permanent housing. Staff help youth secure other resources such as wraparound funds for furniture and other necessities, and scholarships for college.
Youth in the Connect to Home Program are aging out of the child welfare system or may have been previously involved in the system and have experienced homelessness. Connect to Home provided supportive services and apartments through Housing Choice Vouchers for Section 8 Housing to 20 youth. Our Life Skills Program serves youth referred by the Division of Child Protection and Permanency (DCP&P). Youth may be 14 or older and case management may include in home services to access progress in needed life skills. A Youth Coach provided 132 individual sessions on life skills topics such job skills, resume writing, healthy relationships, budgeting, teaching specific life skills as requested with youth, applying to college and other topics of interest to them.
