Organizations Filed Purposes: CONNECTING THE PEOPLE AND PLACES OF NEW JERSEY'S RICH REVOLUTIONARY HERITAGE TO INSPIRE COMMUNITY PRIDE, STEWARDSHIP, AND CIVIC ENGAGEMENT

TO PROMOTE THE HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION IN NEW JERSEY

Crossroads of the American Revolution Association was founded in 2002 as the only state-wide non-profit organization established to offer a forum for new citizen initiatives on education, historical interpretation, site use and heritage tourism, and to raise popular appreciation of the historical significance of the American Revolution in New Jersey. When Congress established the Crossroads of the American Revolution National Heritage Area in 2006, the Association was designated as the coordinating entity for the Heritage Area. We involve local communities and other partners to revitalize our historic cities and towns by reclaiming, enhancing and linking our threatened revolutionary war sites and heritage landscapes by promoting cultural and heritage tourism. We will gain national and international visibility for New Jersey's irreplaceable revolutionary war landscapes and sites and promote economic development. Consistent with our mission, Crossroads has been designated as the official not-for-profit partner of the New Jersey Historical Commission in planning Revolution NJ, the state's commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the United States. As a foundational step toward preparing the state as a premier heritage tourism destination during the anniversary and for years to come, we commissioned a comprehensive visitor readiness assessment of 150 New Jersey Revolutionary-era historic sites to determine needs and associated costs for site preservation, access, storyline development, visitor services and staff/volunteer skills training. Crossroads is also working on tourism training programs and new media that will engage New Jersey's diverse population in telling an inclusive story of the impact of the Revolution on average 18th century New Jerseyans, whether they advocated independence, continued loyalty to the British Crown, or neutrality.
