URBAN REFUGEES USA supports & works with URBAN REFUGEES (France), a French non-profit, to improve the lives of refugees living in cities. We believe solutions to the refugee crisis exist and take root in refugee communities. We provide technical & financial support to refugee led community organizations, advocate for the recognition of refugee led organizations as key contributors to solving the refugee crisis, and build a global network of refugee led organizations to share best practices.
URBAN REFUGEES USA improves the lives of urban refugees & internally displaced persons by providing technical & financial support to refugee led mutual assistance organizations, advocating for their critical role in solving the refugee crisis, and building a global network of refugee led organizations.
Urban Refugees developed and runs the Urban Refugees Incubation Program (URIP), an intensive 6-month program that trains the leaders of Refugee Led Organizations (RLOs) in project management, communications, community mobilization, leadership, building partnerships, finance, fund raising, governance and information technology. RLOs are mutual assistance organizations composed of and led by refugees and are the key way many refugees return to being self-supporting and contributing members of our global society. Strong leadership at these organizations is essential to solving the refugee crisis. Working with URBAN REFUGEES (France), in 2019 we started implementation of the Urban Refugees Incubation Program (URIP) in Kampala, Uganda building on the insights gained from the pilot program in 2016-2017 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. In 2019, we trained the leaders of two RLOs: Sudanese Women for Peace & Development Association (SWPDA) and United South Sudan Urban Refugees Community (USSURC). Despite COVID-19, in 2020, we continued training SWPDA and USSURC, and added three more RLOs: Somali Community Association of Uganda (SCAU), Refugee-Led Organizations Network (RELON), and Refugee Entrepreneurship Association Limited (REAL) to the training program. Responding to COVID-19, we provided training, assistance and accurate information about the virus to the refugee communities.
In 2020, we began work developing an advocacy training program to be launched in 2021 in Nairobi, Kenya. The objective is to equip the leaders of Refugee Led Organizations with the skills to advocate for their organization and members on the national, regional, and international level by identifying goals, developing strategies, partnering with other organizations, identifying opportunities, and monitoring & evaluating strategy success. This program is being conducted in partnership with other key organizations supporting refugees.
